Wii Fit is a Hit for Brits
Every Christmas in Gamerland, there’s always the hot new console or game title that is a must-have both here in the States and around the globe. As tech and gaming have grown exponentially over the past decade, there seems to be more and more frenzy surrounding gaming during the holiday season. Recent numbers posted by Hitwise (a company that monitors internet traffic) have shown that Wii Fit is far and away the most searched-for title online during this year’s holiday lead-up in the UK. In contrast to last year, the Wii console was the front-runner.
Wii Fit leads not only in gaming, but also in the consumer electronics category in general. In consumer electronics for the month of October, Wii Fit snagged the top spot ahead of the Wii console and Apple’s iPhone, which landed at 2nd and 3rd respectively. The other major gaming players in this category, Sony and Microsoft, you have to look a little further down the list; the PS3 and the Xbox 360 come in at 6th and 7th. Overall, console searches in general are down from the previous year, implying that this is the Christmas for software, at least for British consumers.
Looking just at video games, Wii Fit had a dominant lead in Hitwise’s stats for the month of October, with a 16.47% share of video game searches. The next closest is the Xbox-exclusive title Fable 2, which had a relatively paltry 4.9%. The remainder of the list is dominated by multi-platform titles that tend to be more popular in the realm of internet searches.
