Nintendo Wii

Waggle Fairy Spreads the Waggle Magic… On Stuff We’ve Already Played

As of this writing, there have been four reported drownings at Nintendo HQ. Not from the usual suspect (water), but from people trying to swim through the massive pools of money they have in storage. It isn’t their fault that people keep buying their console, but you would think Nintendo would slow down, even for just a minute or so, and take time to count the money and find those missing bodies. Slowing down and taking time to think of brand new ideas and new intellectual properties isn’t on Nintendo’s agenda, either, and their recently announced line of Play on Wii series is evidence.

Nintendo continues to perpetuate the stereotype that the Wii is secretly two GameCubes duct taped together by releasing old GameCube games on the Wii. But wait! It’s not just a simple rehash of old games, now they have motion controls! Don’t you remember when you were first playing Metroid Prime (1 and 2), Pikmin (1 and 2), Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Chibi-Robo, and Mario Power Tennis and all you could think about was how much better this game would be if Nintendo could somehow infuse motion controls into these games? Well, dreams do come true, since that’s exactly what is happening!

All joking aside, the GameCube did not have as huge of an install base as its successor, so it makes sense to let those who missed these stunning games the first time around have a second chance. I know I passed Pikmin the first time around, and I do see this as a great chance to jump on that bandwagon. We have all seen how nice the Prime games control with the remote/nunchuk combo, so there is no real harm in updating games. Best case scenario, a bunch of neophytes of gaming take the plunge and see what they have been missing all of these years of turning their nose up to the industry.

Seems like it’s one of those “everybody wins” situations. That’s what the PR would want you to think, but I’m here to pop that dream bubble. To the super-casual gamer it may seem that Nintendo is stalling so they do not have to release any new IPs or first party products that are worth more than the case they’re packaged in. The Wii is quickly becoming a desolate wasteland of rehashes and ports. It’s like they’re the GameStop of the console world; just trying to sell us the same product over and over again. I’m sorry if I’ve given you nightmares.

I think we all wish that Nintendo would put some effort into making worthy sequels to these games instead of just simply adding some motion controls and porting them onto the Wii. This all just reeks of a cheap way to make some more money and I’m not down with that. I have always been a Nintendo follower, but now-a-days it is just getting ludicrous. I hope they have some sort of ace up their sleeve. I’d even take a jack, or the six of hearts at this point.
