Vigster: Facebook For Gamers

Facebook meets Shelfari…for gamers. Vigster.com, the self-proclaimed “Planet for Gamers,” is what you get when you mix social networking with video games. Although just in beta, Vigster promises to be the “IMDB of video games,” and looks to be on the right track.

Vigster allows you to create your own profile and then rate, review, show off, comment, share, buy, and learn about video games. To aid the discussion, every member has a Gameshelf (the very Shelfari aspect) which displays what games they own, have played, and want. Each profile even has a wall for your friends to write on (a la MySpace and Facebook). And, like Facebook, you can make friends and see what they’re up to (when not gaming).

Much like IMDB, Vigster invites gamers to discuss and offer information on their favorite games. Users can provide anything from screenshots to video to criticism on the games of their choosing. Vigster even has its own news portal.

Fighting against the likes of IGN and Gamespot, Vigster has a long way to go. To help ease the pain, developers are working on a Vigster application for Facebook, and widgets for other social networking sites.

The interface looks clean and there’s a wealth of information. It’s tricky balancing cleanliness while simultaneously displaying tons of information, but Vigster pulls this off pretty well. The site is currently in beta and has a small community, but if word spreads, it has the potential to be one of—if not the—biggest gaming-social networking sites to ever grace the internet.
