RE5: Typewriters, New Controls, and Wesker? Oh My!
Resident Evil fans have had their eye on the fifth installment of the series since its debut announcement over three years ago. More recent information from earlier this month has fans both fired up and puzzled: the lack of the traditional typewriter save system is out, an optional new control scheme named “D-Type” has been added and, finally, the addition of a new character, Excella Gionne and long time Resident Evil badass Albert Wesker. Let’s take a reassuring look at some of these changes.
A staple of the Resident Evil series, the typewriter saving system will be missed; however, its replacement is a lot more practical. Checkpoints and chapters make up the save system for the newest installment to the series. While this may make some fans mad, in the end it is a more practical choice. For both aesthetics and functionality, getting rid of typewriters is the best choice.
Strafing and being able to manipulate the camera while aiming will all be possible with the D-Type Control system! Utilizing this new system sets the player up to aim with the left trigger and shoot with the right trigger; however, you will not be able to move while firing. Now, I am not one to suggest messing with a formula that has worked in the past, but while Resident Evil 4’s control system was good, there is already room for improvements. If this new system scares you, then you’re in luck: it’s optional. On the other hand, if you’re the daring type, giving this a shot may be just the thing you have been wanting in a Resident Evil.
This trailer is by far the biggest announcement for Resident Evil 5 yet, showing off the addition of a new character, Monica Belucci, and her collaborator Albert Wesker! That’s right; Wesker is back and more badass than ever! Watching the trailer revealed that there is nothing that Capcom could add to make Resident Evil 5 more awesome. Okay, maybe if they added in Akuma, then it would be perfect. Even Jun Takeuchi, RE5’s chief producer, agrees!
