Top 5 Scary Games To Play On Halloween

All Hallows Eve is here, so now is the time to bring out the most frightening video games! There are a lot to choose from, varying from the ones that creep you out, make you jump, and of course make you yell, “WTF!” So to help you narrow it down to the best of the best, I’ve put together a list of the top five horror games to play on Halloween. So pop in one of these games, turn out the lights, and say your prayers, because tonight you’re in for a fright!

5. Resident Evil 2

Dropping you right into a hoard of zombies with little more than a pistol and barely any idea what the heck is going on; Resident Evil 2 did it right with atmosphere back in the days of the original PlayStation. While at times it does rely on the “jump out and go BOO!” tactic of scaring you, in this case it works, especially when you’re all alone. Sporting one of the best storylines in the Resident Evil series, providing a great amount of scares, and sporting a plethora of different monsters waiting around the corner to feast on your flesh, Resident Evil 2 is an obvious choice this Halloween.

4. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem

Heading a completely different direction than the last game on the list, Eternal Darkness will mess with your mind from the moment you start the game until the very last second. This GameCube-exclusive is, to date, one of the most unique and scariest games ever. The game’s patented “sanity meter” not only makes it original, but also adds in a psychological creep factor that no other game has replicated since. Footsteps, screams, door slams, bleeding walls, disappearing monsters, and the potential violent explosions of the main character—all of these will affect the character’s sanity. However, it doesn’t end there; the game loves to toy with not just the in-game character, but also the player themselves. With error messages saying there has been a hardware malfunction, you may just fall prey to the game’s ploy. If you do fall for its tricks, you will suffer the scariest fate of all: losing all your progress since your last save!

3. BioShock

Bringing the type of atmosphere that most games only wish they could attain, BioShock really makes you feel like you are deep under the Atlantic Ocean in the “Utopian” city of Rapture. Seeing a Big Daddy for the first time is a hard experience to explain, and once you have fought one for yourself you will never be the same again. With a plot that twists and turns, making you second guess your moral choices, and giving you, the player, a sense of isolation while simultaneously supplying a feeling that you’re not completely alone, BioShock is definitely a game to play on the day of the dead.

2. Dead Space

Many of the games on this list many of you will have played before; the difference with Dead Space is that a good portion of you may not have. This definitely works towards the game’s benefit since there is no experience like playing a scary game for the first time. The sense of isolation that BioShock had is there, though not done quite as well. However, what it lacks in this respect it makes up by including a constant flux of nasty Necromorphs that want to dismember poor Isaac. Already stated in our review of the game, you will scream, you will jump, and you will feel like you’re right there with Isaac. Therefore, if you haven’t already taken that trek into the Ishimura, Halloween is the perfect time to do so.

1. Silent Hill 2

This is not just one of the best horror games, but is one of the best games ever. Silent Hill 2 is exactly the kind of game you’ll want to play on Halloween if you’re looking for a good fright. This isn’t just a game, it’s an experience, and if you are a horror game junkie (like myself), you owe it to yourself to play it. Providing a plot that will never let you fully understand just what is going on until the very end and keeping you guessing about just what choices you should make, the storyline is amazingly well done. A sense of isolation that has yet to be replicated perfectly, constantly making you distrust everyone, everything, and anything you come across, and making you even second-guess yourself, there is just no reason not to play this game on any day for a good scare.

So seriously, pick up a game from the list and give yourself a good scare. Because nothing gets us here at GotGame in the Halloween spirit like a terrifying video game. Well, some of us.
