Too Many Video Games: Is There Such A Thing?

Living in the era of the Copy Cat, one has to ask if we really do have an overload of video games. Guitar Hero III comes out, Rock Band isn’t too far behind. Enjoy Dynasty Warriors? Samurai Warriors came out as an answer to that. And who can forget the countless MMORPGs that blossomed and branched out of The Realm (which brags about being the first and longest-played graphic MMORPG). You have creations such as Everquest, Eve Online, and the still ever-popular, World of Warcraft.

Do we have too many video games? I say no. Granted, each company is marketing their own copy of what’s flying off the shelves, but each also adds their personal flavor to it. It’s like choosing Wendy’s over McDonald’s. You know what you’re getting, it’s just a matter of which taste you prefer more.

According to Kotaku, the problem lies in that there just too many games and not enough time. The “Nintendo” Generation is simply getting older. We have lives of our own. We’ve graduated college, started our careers, and are settling down and having families. The games that we used to pour countless hours into during the week and on the weekends are being packed away and stored on the highest closet shelves.

And however true that may be, game stores are quickly adopting the “curse” of the supermarkets. You go in for one game and walk out with two or three that also caught your eye. How many of these games have we played? How many have stayed in their boxes only to become trade fodder for the next “Must Have” game?

Have we simply been afflicted with Shiny Object Syndrome, where we have a flavor of the month concerning video games (pistachio dream this month)? One thing stands true, we have reached an era where we can allow ourselves to have this “syndrome” and jump from one game to the next. And really, is that such a terrible thing?
