MMORPGs, PC, World of WarCraft

Tips for Picking Out Your First MMO

So, you finally saved up your allowance and decided to get into online gaming. Thing is, there are so many MMORPGs out there, it’s next to impossible to decide which one you want to play; it’s like they’re breeding. It seems for every three single player games that come out, one MMORPG is released as well. There is an MMO world for everything: Conan the Barbarian, Lord of the Rings, even Dungeons and Dragons; and they’re all vying for a go at your coin purse.

Fortunately, there is some relief for those that are overburdened by this phenomenal choice. Every MMORPG out there is targeted toward a unique audience. Determining which audience you fall under determines the type of MMORPG you should purchase (or in some cases, download).

My advice: select the MMO that best suits your schedule and bank account. If you have little time or money for playing games, then World of Warcraft (WoW), Star Wars Galaxies (SWG), or any other online game that charges per month is not for you. You can play these games, however, because of the time commitment required to complete certain quests and receive high level items, you might not get your money’s worth. I would recommend one of those free games that aren’t such a time drain, like Puzzle Pirates or Guild Wars.

Time not an issue? Want more bang for your buck? Then you may want to look to WoW and SWG. I would personally recommend SWG over WOW though, mainly due to the infinite amount of missions a character could accomplish in a single gaming session. Of course, WoW’s ever-lasting appeal and insane player draw guarantees a great social experience, for a very long time.

All in all, the choice is really up to you. No one can tell you what MMORPG you have to buy and/or play. All MMORPGs use different tactics to try and lure new players to the game while keeping existing players playing. Look into each prospective title and be sure to make an informed decision. If a certain MMORPG does not appeal to you, just wait. Sooner or later the game will most likely introduce something new and that addition may be the one that hooks you. Time will tell.
