The Game that Never Dies: 4 Reasons why Counter-Strike 1.6 is Still Popular

Walk into any cybercafe and take note of your surroundings: rows of bright monitors projecting an eclectic display of PC favorites. Though, somewhere in all of this, you are bound to see at least a few gamers playing the original Counter-Strike, their fingers rapidly navigating keyboard and mouse while managing a score of 30-0 on de_dust. So, what makes this old shooter still popular amidst so many other great titles of its genre?

1. Length of Existence: Those who remember the 1999 mod release date of Counter-Strike-–-and there are a lot-–-undoubtedly possess a unique connection to it, secretly mocking the fanboys of its clone on the Source engine. Watching its momentous growth from multiple beta versions to 1.5 and finally 1.6, fans of this exceptional shooter feel a sense of pride through being a part of its history. Though graphically older, the smooth, retro aesthetics of 1.6 still captivate gamers who champion fast, heart-pounding gameplay.

2. Wide-Spread Availability: Despite being visually more attractive, Counter-Strike: Source generally requires a higher-end PC to run, whereas CS 1.6 can be played on most computers-–-and without ever consulting the ’system requirements’ page after realizing your graphics card’s drivers are outdated. This is certainly a plus for low-budget gamers. And because both Source and CS 1.6 contain similar gameplay, if not identical, gamers are still playing 1.6 after realizing the sheer novelty of the latter.

Graphics aside, 1.6 is certainly the more economical choice, being half the price of its contemporary, and far less than any newly-released Counter-Strike wannabe shooter you’ll find today. With these two easily-met attributes, it’s obvious why so many people still play CS 1.6.

3. Improved Connections: Supported through Valve’s brain-child, Steam, the communications and game-distribution program which is becoming known as “the iTunes of gaming,” CS 1.6 allows for players to easily connect with their friends across the country – even the world. With a built-in Steam Community system, one can join their friends on any favorite Counter-Strike map in seconds. This ingenuity has kept the CS community alive by eliminating the hassle of navigating servers and reading off endless lists of IP addresses, which was common practice within the previous interface.

4. Gaming Culture: The culture that has developed around Counter-Strike for nearly a decade has been shown to be highly influential to the entire genre of shooters, and is still keeping the game fun for players today. CS players have even taken to popularizing the game’s use of Internet lingo (“1337” speak) and culture, as seen in numerous web comics and online television shows, such as Pure Ownage.

With so many variables plaguing the future of the game industry’s exponential growth, it’s certainly nice to have Counter-Strike 1.6 as a long-standing constant.
