The Dark Horse of Zombie Games: Zombie Panic! Source
Released January 28th, the new version (1.5) of Zombie Panic! Source, a popular survival-horror mod for Half-Life 2 that pits survivors versus zombies in a terrifying struggle, has been receiving a lot of hype in the past few days. With new maps, improved gameplay, and the introduction of a “ZP:S Barricade System,” fans are still getting used to the next installment of the series, though seem excited for this long-overdue update.
Players might recall ZP’s humble beginnings as a Half-Life (original) mod, sharing the tail-end of the halcyon days of such mods like Firearms, Natural Selection, or Vampire Slayer. It’s newer form, though aesthetically more mature, maintains the same, classic style of gameplay; that is, zombies hunting down survivors, converting them to their brain-eating cause, until eventually conquering the map. Though, the survivors get a new advantage this time around.

Yikes! Time to run and hide.
As with most good zombie flicks, like Night of the Living Dead, the outnumbered humans usually find some way to construct a make-shift fortress in order to slow the undead advance. So, it’s odd to see industry giants like Left 4 Dead completely neglect this component. Yet, where they’ve failed, Zombie Panic! Source has succeeded. Survivors now have access to ZP’s “Barricade System,” where entrances can be boarded up with materials collected throughout the map. Though, if hiding doesn’t interest you, the update includes a brand new weapon, the Winchester double-barrel shotgun, as well as updates to the old arsenal.

Apart from being an extremely well-loved mod, Zombie Panic! Source reminds us of the unique role mods can play within any genre. With this release, Zombie Panic! and many mods of its kind are shown to be quite capable of crafting new experiences — and doing so without a huge budget.
