The Battle Rages on: Simulation- vs. Arcade-Styled Sports Games

boxingSports games have come a long way since the days of Tecmo Football or Blades of Steel, although who doesn’t like to fire up the old Nintendo system and throw the ole pigskin the length of the field in Tecmo? Over the years as technology developed, the games did as well, from better graphics to more complex game play, and sports games are no exception. Sports titles, for the most part, have become more realistic in player models, overall play, and available modes. While advancements in technology have made sports games more realistic, as evidenced by the Madden franchise, there is still a demand for the arcade-like sports titles, games that allow players to defy the laws of physics in a sort of fantasy sports world. Is one style of sports gaming superior to the other? I’m here to try to help the sports gamer out, outlining the pros and cons of both styles, hopefully helping the indecisive gamer to decide which style they would enjoy more and getting the most out of their purchase.

madden-09The simulation-styled sports titles, such as NHL ‘09 and Madden ‘09, have made huge strives in terms of game play and the modes of play they offer. The players move fluidly and even possess some of the same characteristics of their real life counterparts, such as pitching motions or batting stances. These games try to be as life-like as technology will allow.

Besides realistic game play, these simulation-styled games give players the chance to throw on the coach’s cap, offering players the opportunity to call a Tampa 2 defense or a linebacker blitz to thwart the offense on a third and long situation. This does not just apply to football, but all sports, as gamers have a plethora of coaching options.

The last benefit of these simulation games is the franchise or general manager mode that is generally present. Have you ever dreamed of taking over your favorite team, making personal decisions, cutting players to free up salary, scouting and drafting rookies, signing that big free agent, or trading a player whose low morale is hurting the team? Well, these modes allow you to do just that, giving the player the ultimate decision-making power in creating that dynasty team.

blitz-the-league1Arcade-styled sports titles, such as The Bigs and Blitz the League, lie on the other side of the spectrum. These games tend to be more action packed and fast paced. The rules of gravity rarely apply, as players posses the ability to dunk from the three-point line. Also, these games feature heavier hits, further home runs, and blazing speed. As if that wasn’t outlandish enough, these types of games usually do not follow the rules of sports; anything goes as penalties cease to exist. Power slamming the running back is as enjoyable as it is necessary to succeed in the game.

While that may appeal to some, a major turn-off for people is this type of fantasy sports world, which seems to incorporate wrestling, sports, and super humans. Some will prefer a more realistic representation of their favorite sport. These games also lack some of the in-depth modes that the realistic titles feature. While some have a franchise mode, they are usually nothing more than a story and leave little control over the team to the player.

Having two styles of games offers sports fans a ton of options. Some will prefer the magnitude of features that are contained in a simulation-styled game, while others would rather throw a 120 mph fastball engulfed in flames. The decision is really up to you, as each offer a distinct take on the sport. Of course, for all those die hard sports fans, you may need to invest some time in both, satisfying your inner sports cravings.
