Left 4 Dead 2 Review

Well, it’s that time of year again. The time when all of those big-shot game developers KNOW that you are sitting on your fat butts looking for something fun to do, so of course all of the best games are released! Well we all know that Valve has an impressive track record with The Orange Box and the previous Left 4 Dead, so we should certainly expect nothing less than gold from their new zombie slasher-thrasher, but should you spend your hard earned money on this, or one of the many other new releases? Well I’d like to thank Valve for sending me an early copy of the game to review for all of you, so here are my thoughts on Left 4 Dead 2.

Obscure: The Aftermath PSP Review

obscure-the-aftermath-psp-01Obscure: The Aftermath has just been ported for the PSP, just in time for Halloween! You could indulge in your favorite cult horror Blockbuster rental, why not dive into a survival horror game for a much more interactive experience?

This is my first taste of the Obscure franchise, having missed out on not only the first game, but also the original version of this sequel. I hope to offer a unique view to others who have never had the pleasure, but are curious to give it a try.

Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode: Mercenaries 2.0

Many of us are aware of the controversy behind Capcom’s Versus Mode for recent chart-topper Resident Evil 5. Between the fact that the content was finished prior to the games launch, that its mere 1.86 MB download was thought to simply unlock content already on the disc, and the fact that it costs $4.99 when fans already spent $60 a month earlier, gamers everywhere were in a rage.

The Dark Horse of Zombie Games: Zombie Panic! Source

Zombie PanicReleased January 28th, the new version (1.5) of Zombie Panic! Source, a popular survival-horror mod for Half-Life 2 that pits survivors versus zombies in a terrifying struggle, has been receiving a lot of hype in the past few days. With new maps, improved gameplay, and the introduction of a “ZP:S Barricade System,” fans are still getting used to the next installment of the series, though seem excited for this long-overdue update. Left 4 Dead Patch Makes Zombies Deadlier, Survivors Deader

A new patch for Left 4 Dead has gone live (maybe not the best choice of words, but no matter). Apparently, Valve thought the Survivors had it too easy, because most of the updates beef up the undead while plugging up loopholes the living were exploiting.

For starters, infected players now have a HUD to keep track of how allies are faring. And as a late Christmas gift to Team Zombie, all the Special Infected get some goodies. (Except for the Boomer. I think he just got a plate of cookies or something. I mean, look at the guy…)

10 Life Lessons From Survival Horror

Admittedly, video games aren’t the most constructive hobby. The list of practical skills honed by any game is pretty short, especially games in my genre of choice: Survival Horror. (Granted, when the zombie apocalypse comes, or when your dead wife sends you a letter beckoning you to a town willed into existence by years of repressed guilt and sexual frustration, you’ll know who to call.)

But that’s not to say Survival Horror has no redeeming qualities. I’ve learned so much from these games, and now I’m passing the wisdom on to you… Read More »

Vampires vs. Zombies: Why Brain-Eating is Better than Blood-Sucking

With the recent arrival of Left 4 Dead to consoles and Twilight to theaters, I began to ponder an age-old question. No, it’s not why text message shortcuts for words have worked their way into zombie-themed game titles, or even why audiences are able to stomach another “youth vampire” film after The Lost Boys: The Tribe’s straight-to-video release earlier this year, but rather, “Who’s scarier: zombies or vampires?” Allow me to explain why zombies are the more frightening, and ultimately superior, of the two.

Reinventing the Generic Bad Guy

The phone rings. “What’s that? I gotta go save the world? Alright…which is it this time? Zombies? Nazis? Robots? Oh, it’s Nazis again. I’ll be right over.” It’s empowering being the one to single-handedly mow through hordes of generic bad guys on your way to take down The Big Boss, but over the past decade, it feels like we’re fighting the same armies. Are there no new races or organizations lurking in the shadows, plotting our demise? It’s time to enlist a new menace to give evil a fresh face!
