On December 2nd, 2009 I headed over to Varnish Gallery in San Francisco to attend the Wake of Guybrush Threepwood, protagonist of Telltale Games’ Tales of Monkey Island. Unfortunately in Episode Four of the series, Threepwood lost his life and Telltale was reminiscing about the life and times of their ageless hero.
But more seriously, Telltale Games was showing off the last episode, Rise of the Pirate God, before its December 8th release.

Nintendo Wii
With Nintendo Wii’s Wiiware, there hasn’t been much in regards to Mature titles. Actually, when the word “Mature” and Nintendo are in the same sentence, there isn’t much to combine the two together.
Last Flight looks to change that landscape by the combination of cell shaded graphics with a somewhat bloody exterior. If cell shading doesn’t sound familiar, then look at XIII or Brave Fencer Mushashi 2 and you’ll see what the technique looks like.

Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3, Xbox 360
1080p resolution. Bloom lighting. Normal mapping. 8-bit graphics? The latest wave of consoles is more high tech than ever, but old-school gaming is surprisingly still in vogue. All three next-gen consoles offer services that celebrate the best of our gaming heritage. A pleasant side effect of this dedication to preserving past classics has been a retro revival; re-releasing older titles is just the tip of the warp pipe. Leave it to long-time industry trendsetter Capcom to rock the retro boat by announcing that Mega Man 9 is being built from the ground up for the Wii, 360, and PS3 in glorious 8-bit. Commence cheering, gaming geezers – everything old is new again.

Casual Games, Nintendo Wii

Despite a distinct lack of chiaroscuro shading and consummate Vs, Strongbad has managed to win the respect and demand the hearts of a legion of followers, both attractive and not. Unfortunately, only fans that fall into the first of these categories will be treated to his new WiiWare title, Strongbad’s Cool Game for Attractive People. Just writing about the game, I have to wear a bag over my head. Which is a shame, because looking at all of its nifty videos was just starting to rinse out the bad taste left in my mouth by our last featured WiiWare title.

Gamer Culture, Nintendo Wii

I just read a blip about the WiiWare title Major League Eating: The Game in the most recent issue of EGM, and not an hour later, watched an episode of CSI where a 419 (dead body for the non-burgeoning forensic scientists of you) took part in a hotdog eating contest and then gorged himself to death. Though not even close to the grossest thing on CSI, (despite Hodges fishing through buckets of the guy’s stomach contents), the episode’s timing raised bile to the back of my throat.
