Obscure: The Aftermath has just been ported for the PSP, just in time for Halloween! You could indulge in your favorite cult horror Blockbuster rental, why not dive into a survival horror game for a much more interactive experience?
This is my first taste of the Obscure franchise, having missed out on not only the first game, but also the original version of this sequel. I hope to offer a unique view to others who have never had the pleasure, but are curious to give it a try.

Survival Horror fans: If you’re not too busy, I’d like a minute of your time. I know you’re not really doing anything, because the number of quality releases in the genre over the past few years can be counted with a preschool education.
Though it’s already been there several times in the past, Survival Horror has gone to Hell. Newer titles smother you with health and ammunition. And no matter how revolting, faith-crushing, or vile the Lovecraftian monstrosity back to swallow the world/animated legion of festering corpses/ruinous proof man should never play God regardless of how cool it makes him feel that’s creeping ever closer to you is, your dozens of high caliber firearms assure the abomination will never be referred to as “scary.”
Fortunately, the twisted minds over at Frictional Games are bringing Survival Horror back in a big way. The studio’s recent Penumbra trilogy has all the right elements: an underarmed protagonist, truly vicious enemies, and a story worth reading a bunch of dead people’s journals to unravel.

Admittedly, video games aren’t the most constructive hobby. The list of practical skills honed by any game is pretty short, especially games in my genre of choice: Survival Horror. (Granted, when the zombie apocalypse comes, or when your dead wife sends you a letter beckoning you to a town willed into existence by years of repressed guilt and sexual frustration, you’ll know who to call.)
But that’s not to say Survival Horror has no redeeming qualities. I’ve learned so much from these games, and now I’m passing the wisdom on to you… Read More »

Video games that are based off of movie or television licenses have a reputation for either being not nearly as good, or faithfully as disappointing as their source material. There are exceptions to this rule, though they are few and far between. But then there are cases where Hollywood completely drops the ball and neglects a premise that—while it may be hit or miss cinematically—begs to be given a video game treatment.

When it comes to horror in games, there are a few things that are givens: it will likely be twisted, bloody, and terrifying. In other words, my kind of game. The genres of such games aren’t quite as predictable, however, ranging anywhere from RPGs to first-person shooters, and rightfully so; why limit a fun thing like terror to just one genre? Nevertheless, when looking at the overlying themes of these diverse games, trends have been emerging, giving everyone a glimpse of where things are possibly headed.

Dead Space is a game of many space helmets. Some try to classify it in the survival horror category, and while it is scary and you are trying to survive, it is much more than that. I would classify it more as an action horror space simulation. Let me break it down for you.
You play as Isaac, an engineer who has traveled to the Ishimura to help repair some things that went wrong. But he soon found the place overrun with Necromorphs (zombie-like creatures) and dead bodies and realized that he would be doing less repairing and more severing. Luckily, he has a couple of firearms to dispose of the Necromorph masses.

You know… I’m typically not a “hype” person. I don’t like ads, and I intentionally ignore them. If I take an opinion, it’s gotta be from a real person. And, even then, I reserve judgment on everything until I try it myself. And all this noise coming from EA about their new survival horror game is cacophonous. So, here’s the deal: Dead Space = Hype.
