The Social Networking Double Standard
Time is a mystifying force. It can be as simple as the numbers displayed on your watch, or it can be a complex scientific concept that can boggle your mind. Regardless, one thing is certain about time, none of us can escape it, and no matter what you’re doing or where you are, time is always ticking.
For something so omniscient, it’s interesting at how unexplainable and easy it is when we lose track of it.
A not-so-scientific saying exists that states time flies by when you’re having fun. Gaming and social networking adds new dimensions to this saying.
A Netherlands based company called W-41 has come up with a digital logo that will allow people to scan one another with a camera phone, and it will then direct them to the scanee’s Facebook page.
Looking to hop on the social networking bandwagon, Sega launched this week their new free online gaming site, PlaySega. There, Sega fanatics and the casual crowd alike can log in to play a handful of free games, collect prizes, and communicate with fellow gamers. But is it just another social networking site, or does Sega have more to offer than just a MySpace with Sonic?
One of Japan’s most popular genres is the dating simulation, nicknamed the “galge” (short for “gal game”). Strangely, it’s never quite caught on in the West. In the past, this has exclusively been the guilty pleasure for genetically and socially impaired virgin males who never stood the chance otherwise of contacting the fairer sex. But what’s this we see on the horizon? A dating sim…for girls??
Facebook meets Shelfari…for gamers. Vigster.com, the self-proclaimed “Planet for Gamers,” is what you get when you mix social networking with video games. Although just in beta, Vigster promises to be the “IMDB of video games,” and looks to be on the right track.
