After watching The Beatles: Rock Band presentation at E3, I’m sure the game is going to speak to a lot of classic rock and music fans. When gamers consider that The Beatles are one of the most influential bands to the most wide variety of genres, and the game covers the band’s whole discography, there is going to be a huge amount of content to keep the fans happy.
MTV Games and Harmonix released a new commercial for The Beatles: Rock Band recreating the Abbey Road album cover photo shoot from 1969. After taking a look at the commercial, without the evolution of video editing and computer aided animation, this commercial could have never been made. It’s interesting, but also a little disturbing.

Rest in peace, guitar. Fabled tool of musical gods, stringed wonder upon which the craft of Carlos Santana, Jack Black, and countless others was plied, the end is nigh. You have been brought low by the bane of true musicians everywhere, that accursed Guitar Hero and its estranged cousin, Rock Band. Or have you? Has the music or rhythm game genre truly rendered you inert and unloved?

For all of those wannabe guitarists, mashing color-coded buttons on a plastic guitar, which has nothing to do with any type of real instrument playing, Disney has some good news. Soon you’ll be able to throw down those plastic toys, which resembles something found in the toddler section of your local kid store, and take up a real guitar. Disney has announced Disney Star Guitarist, an educational and challenging game that uses a real guitar as a controller.

Pardon the pity party, but in high school, I really had no one to talk to about video games. My gender and my aggressive personality set me apart from the real nerds who were the gamers back then. Of course, in the days before I discovered the eternal, in-depth conversations taking place on internet message boards, the main people I subjected to my strongly specialized opinions were my very patient parents.

You won’t be familiar with Harold Sakuishi unless you’re an anime or manga fan, but you should be. He has covered baseball, martial arts, and music in his manga, and his dense storylines would translate well into light RPGs and other genres. In particular, his 34-volume Beck Mongolian Chop Squad manga could be the end-all for music/RPG games.

Gamer Culture
While “Top 5” lists are always good for an informative opinion about something or other, today is a day that we look at a “Bottom Five” list, compiling the five worst types of gamers. Assembled here are the crème de le crème of suckitude: five subspecies you should immediately run in fear of and, most importantly, why. Although those featured in today’s “Bottom Five” realistically have little chance of changing who they are, that doesn’t mean I can’t make fun of them. Because making fun of other people is one of the few pleasures left in my own sad, pathetic life. So prepare that flame shield and don’t feed that troll, because tonight, I dine, IN HELL. Gamer hell, that is.

As I’m sure you’ve heard, The Beatles are coming to Rock Band. The Fab Four announced Thursday they will be making their digital debut via a partnership with MTV and Harmonix, which looks to see the band featured in its own exclusive Rock Band title, slated for a holiday 2009 release. Of course, this is a major announcement for a plethora of reasons. The most important reason is hidden underneath the surface of this monstrous musical development.

With last month’s release of Wii Music, Nintendo concludes its “Big Four” group of nontraditional games (Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Wii Fit being the previous three). Unfortunately for the Big N, its foray into the music game genre has been receiving less than stellar reviews, averaging a score of 60, according to Metacritic. Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s resident developer guru, has come out in support of his game. Which, he admits, may not really be a “game” at all, but rather something approaching a “musical arrangement engine.” It would appear that with Wii Music, Nintendo’s dogged pursuit of nongamers has finally resulted in a misstep, in spite of Miyamoto’s firm defense of his creation.
