A Less General Explanation to Why We Play Games

why GotGameSeveral questions have dominated the history of man…

What is the meaning of life? is there a God? Did OJ really do it? Well, I don’t know, I don’t know, and *reaches for glass of water* next question please!

However, there is one question of equally enormous value to society (I promise) that I would like to explore, which would be, “Why we do we play games?”

Tetris is one of those rare games that even your grandparents have played. Alexey Pajitnov’s quintessential puzzler has kept folks glued to their controllers for over twenty years. At the end of the day, no one can be perfectly happy. With a myriad of musical tastes, everyone will have their opinions on what songs they want included in their rhythm game. We’ve always wondered: why can’t we have a game that is compatible with any song? Well, Audiosurf is that game. Though not necessarily “new,” since Audiosurf has been available for download on Steam since February, the game’s release in retail markets is sure to breathe some fresh air into the title, even in spite of a price increase above its current $10.

Braid: A Beautiful Puzzle Game Disguised as a 2D Platformer

When games borrow ideas and concepts from other titles, they often lose sight of their own vision and, ultimately, devolve into failure.  Braid is entirely the opposite. It purposely and blatantly borrows the 2D platforming concepts of Super Mario Bros., while also sneaking in the puzzle and time-traveling elements of Prince of Persia, the Impressionist vision of Van Gogh and the storytelling of films like Memento.  Yes, it does this, but it never loses sight of itself, which is why Braid is truly a fantastic, little game – small imperfections aside.

Unseen Problem: Color Blind Gamers

ColorBlindTest7

As gamers, we often take for granted the fact that we can make out a particular team’s flag or the difference between two shaded blocks in our favorite puzzler. But what about those that can’t? Color vision deficiency – commonly known as color blindness – can make these distinctions almost impossible, and it’s a problem that affects more gamers than you may think.
