Robot Punch! News Edition

We live in times of rampant thievery and injustice. Seldom do we so clearly see it as we have in the past month, as skilled warriors are robbed of their victories, the wanting pleas of nations are denied, and even the security of valuable porn is violated.

Take tight hold of your junk, cuz in this week’s Robot Punch!, we take a look at some crooked moves by players and publishers alike that make the world that much more annoying.

Dear Sony: Do The PSP Better!

Sony assured gamers that 2009 would be a big year for the PSP. Can you tell? Here we are, almost into the second quarter, and the horizon still looks foggy for the platform. With its multitude of multimedia capabilities beyond gaming, we’ve yet to determine just what type of device it is.

In this week’s Robot Punch!, we explore the current state of the PSP and what issues Sony should consider if they truly intend to support the console as promised.

Capcom Promises “A Whole Slew” Of Titles For PSN In 2009

Last Saturday, John Diamonon of Capcom posted in his PlayStation blog that Capcom is hard at work to become the #1 digital publisher on the PlayStation Network. After seeing much success in 2008 (thanks to hits like Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix), Capcom and SCEA are forming a plan to make more downloadable content available through PSN in the future.

Preview of PS3-exclusive BioShock DLC

BioShock IncinerateOh, BioShock. Is there really a way to fully enumerate how wonderful an experience you are? Maybe it’s the incredibly unique setting, the idea of genetic amplification, or simply the recurring nightmares I have about freaky little mutated girls drawing fluid from me with giant syringes that makes this game so memorable. Originally released only for Xbox 360 and Windows, the world of Rapture finally came to the PlayStation 3 last month, and Sony stalwarts are getting some bonuses for their patience: namely, PS3-exclusive downloadable content. Details on the DLC, due out November 20th, have recently been revealed.

Demo-lishing Expectations

Prior to Xbox LIVE and Playstation Network, game demos only existed with periodicals on newsstands. Magazines usually had demos on the accompanying CD/DVD, sometimes with coverage of a game on the interior. Occasionally, certain games came packaged with brief, selected demos (Parasite Eve on PlayStation came with a demo of Xenogears, and videos of Brave Fencer Musashi, Bushido Blade 2, and Final Fantasy VIII). Now with Xbox LIVE and PSN, gamers can download demos and have time to test out a wide array of games without dropping any additional coinage. Does this hands-on time help in a purchasing decision?

Downloadable Content: Past, Present and Future

DLC Dinosaur65 Million B.C. Earth downloaded a large comet. This new content added features like mass extinction, no sunlight, and fiery mess. The bugs were not quite worked out.

44 B.C. Julius Caesar downloads the Ides of March pack, which brought a knife into his back, betrayal, political unrest, and power struggle.

1 A.D. Mary downloads a messiah to her womb. It provided much faith and controversy. Contained first DRM that allowed re-download after deletion.

1347 A.D. Europe downloaded a new difficulty level for their living simulation called Black Death. It increased the difficulty to breathe, poisoned blood, caused bloody vomiting and terrible aching limbs. Players found the add-on extremely unbalanced and many could not cut the mustard.

PS3 users received the bulk of this new content but PSP users, fear not: two full game downloads are available, along with a few additional add-ons. So re-up your PSN account balance, because this week’s update has plenty to offer.

Game Rentals: Dinosaur or Evolving Species?

We are all familiar with buyer’s remorse, and it proves to be a costly mistake. Video games have always been expensive; now at usually $60 apiece and sometimes more for that exclusive-limited-edition-only-100,000,000-made collector sets (Metal Gear Solid 4 LE, I love you), sometimes renting is a preferred option. But is it still worth it to rent?
