Everyone plays video games with a goal in mind. The goal is usually very simple: “Even though it’s three in the morning and I have to wake up for school tomorrow, I just want to beat this stupid flash game before I go to sleep.” Goals based around skill of video games usually don’t aim higher than looking for a sense of accomplishment. So it’s easy to determine when someone is too good at a video game: it’s when they can no longer complete their goal because attaining it is not a challenge.

Which is really better? Xbox LIVE or the Playstation Network? At the surface, they appear very similar, but there is a depth to this battle that any casual observer may not understand. I’ve played about 200 matches of Soul Calibur IV online since it debuted weeks ago. While I have had epic matches with soul-shattering defeats and triumphant victories, one thing has been bugging me from the get-go: the lack of character selection variety, particularly the ranked matches. In America, we pay for virtually everything on a per-month basis. We pay our cable, rent, electricity, and water bills monthly. Some people even pay for online gaming per month as well (often on top of all those other bills). So why is it, when we have so many games that do not require a monthly subscription fee, people are willing to pay on a per-month basis just to play these monthly games?
