No longer able to ignore the rising success of games such as World of Warcraft, it looks as if Disney has finally decided to jump on the exponentially growing bandwagon that is MMORPGs. Joining up with the innovative talents of NetZero, Disney announced on December 2nd that they plan the release of Disney Fantasy Online in China this upcoming spring.

Can you patent ideas? Worlds did, back in 2000. Their patent for “system and method for enabling users to interact in a virtual space” is currently being put under scrutiny by NCsoft, who were unexpectedly hit with an infringement suit on Christmas Eve. According to Virtual Worlds News, Worlds claims “NCsoft has infringed on patent 7,181,690… through its games, including City of Heroes, City of Villains, Dungeon Runners, Exteel, Guild Wars, Lineage, Lineage II, and Tabula Rasa.” Read More »

A tiny and quiet announcement (only two sentences!) on December 30, 2008 at Aeria Game’s website revealed that microtransaction-based MMORPG Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine has shifted to open beta. All you need to do is register an account, install the game, and join the wonderful (so far) community.

About a week ago, it was widely discussed that Quakers were gonna have a stab (I guess pacifists can’t have a stab at anything) at their own WoW-like MMO. But, as is the advice my daddy gave me: “don’t believe everything you read,” especially on the internets. But, seriously, how sweet would that be? We’re all so used to killing things in games, but we do it so rarely in real life. It would be a revolutionary game because…it would be so normal.
