Apparently, there are people out there willing to judge my net worth as a person based upon which five CDs I would bring with me if I got stranded on a desert island. Or which five pop-stars I’d bring along for company. Or pretty much any arbitrary list of five items I’d want in tow if I found myself marooned at one of the far corners of the world…
Because I’d rather be judged on the merits of my favorite hobby than on those of my music collection (Weird Al is still culturally relevant, right?), here’s a list of the five video game characters I’d want around should our helicopter do a nosedive into some uncharted island.

Recently I have been thinking about minority representation in the realm of video games. Honestly, it feels like the days of Charlie Chan and “Yes massa” days are still prevalent in many titles. Mirror’s Edge, DICE’s first-person parkour experiment, seemingly inspired almost as many detractors as it did fans when it was released last November. However, when protagonist Faith was given the opportunity to wall-run, jump, and slide at full speed, few could find fault with the adrenaline pumping results. A recent post by Mirror’s Edge designers announced that the requirements to run the program on a PC are not too taxing.
Mirror’s Edge, a first-person, parkour-inspired adventure game has received many mixed reviews. One complaint: High system requirements. For the PC, it seems, this is not the case.

In this day and age of gaming, every developer is turning to violence to sell their title. Not to mention the gorier and bloodier the game, generally the better it does. How rare is it to see a game that actually rewards you for not shooting anyone throughout the campaign? This is exactly what Mirror’s Edge is; rather than having a dark atmosphere with a big muscleman as the main character, we are given a very bright city to traverse as a petite woman by the name of Faith. However, taking such a bold leap in the opposite direction of the norm, does Mirror’s Edge make the grade?
