With the release of the Xbox 360 in November of 2005, Microsoft had a full year to gain a majority of the market share, and did so with the release of great game exclusives, and a reasonably affordable next-gen console. A year later, the Wii and the PS3 were released, and while two years later, the PS3 sales have been somewhat sluggish, losing Sony $3 billion dollars. When Metal Gear Solid 4 came out, the PS3 definitely picked itself up by its bootstraps and began to sell competitively…two years too late.

Despite current economic suckage, video games are proving to be resistant to high gas and food prices. In fact, video games sales have increased. Compared to a year ago, there has been a 53% increase in both software and hardware sales. The biggest surprise? The PS3 outsold the 360 last month, and kept going strong throughout July.

I’ll admit it: I’m a man whore when it comes to any game edition containing the words “limited,” “collector,” or “extended.” If you’re a geek, it goes with the territory. And it didn’t take long before game publishers caught on. There’s the Legendary Edition of Halo 3 complete with the Spartan Mjolnir Mark VI Helmet and the limited edition of Stranglehold that includes a Blu-ray version of “Hard Boiled.”
If that wasn’t enough, recently, Amazon snagged an exclusive deal to sell the “Fallout 3: Survival Edition,” which is a tier above the collector’s edition. What makes it so special? A replica of the Pip-Boy 3000 that’s about the size of an alarm clock. The asking price: $129.99.
