Collector’s Editions Stole my Bike!

collectormania gotgameIt seems like Collector’s Edition have been around forever. If you go back and count gold cartridge games on the NES, then this may be true.

But gamers might remember Collector’s Editions’ later proliferation, beginning somewhere around the mid- to late-PS2-era of video games as a sort of test market for a reestablished price point of $60 per game.

With the new price point in place for this generation, it’s only natural for collector’s edition eclipse this mark by another 10 dollars. If my math is correct, that would put a current-gen CE running for $70.

The Reason BioShock Sucks

Calm yourselves, rabid legions of fanboys! I don’t actually hate BioShock —I just wanted to get your attention. That’s not to say this article’s title is mere fabrication: there is a glaring, omnipresent flaw in Rapture’s sub-aquatic architecture. While the game does deliver with its unnerving atmosphere and dour-yet-charismatic cast, something’s still missing from BioShock.

Unchained Melody: The Power of Game Music

I was around halfway through Final Fantasy X-2. I’d reached the cut scene where you’re supposed to “find out” Lenne and Shuyin’s final fates—which I hated, because I had been awake and attentive enough that I was pretty sure I had already figured out their fates—so I braced myself for some redundant info-dump and was completely blind-sided by what is still one of the best scenes I have ever seen in a video game.

Take one attractive young couple. Combine the flavor of a tragic, untimely death in which they express their undying love. Then add a bit of desperate bravado on his part, some heroic self-sacrifice on hers, make sure they reach out to each other after their bloodless, slow-motion mortal injuries, flavored with trademark Square-Enix visual bedazzlement, and assemble around one unabashedly romantic pop song…and you have the one and to-date only cut scene ever to move me to tears.

Preview of PS3-exclusive BioShock DLC

BioShock IncinerateOh, BioShock. Is there really a way to fully enumerate how wonderful an experience you are? Maybe it’s the incredibly unique setting, the idea of genetic amplification, or simply the recurring nightmares I have about freaky little mutated girls drawing fluid from me with giant syringes that makes this game so memorable. Originally released only for Xbox 360 and Windows, the world of Rapture finally came to the PlayStation 3 last month, and Sony stalwarts are getting some bonuses for their patience: namely, PS3-exclusive downloadable content. Details on the DLC, due out November 20th, have recently been revealed.

Morality in Games, or The Unexamined Game is Not Worth Playing

Video games are growing up. Well, they’re trying to anyway. We used to be content with traipsing through the carefully groomed grounds of the Mushroom Kingdom, guiding pixelated sprites toward a jaggy princess. Maybe this blind escapism is enough: as Super Mario Galaxy showed, sometimes it’s fun to play with gravity and not have to worry about economic turmoil or national security concerns. Sometimes, though, we want games to be something more, to illuminate a previously unknown aspect of the human condition the way a great movie or book does. In the last few years, games like Fable and BioShock have featured morality as a core mechanic, while Grand Theft Auto has actively flouted it and many others have avoided the issue altogether. But the real question here is: can games be moral?

Analyzing the Teaser Trailer for BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams

Gamers were hit with a plane crash of delight—some might even say that they were “rapturous”—when the trailer to BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams leaked onto the Internet last week, which was supposed to be a treat for those who purchase the PS3 version of BioShock, released on October 21st. Featuring what appears to be an older Little Sister clutching a Big Daddy doll and gazing at the sea, the trailer reignites the atmosphere from the first game (due in no small part to the pitch-perfect music) while adding a sense of nostalgia—or maybe regret. While that creepy BioShock feeling has definitely been nailed, the trailer does bring up other questions, such as “What the hell is this game about?”
SPOILER ALERT: Plot points from the first game will be discussed.

A Jerk Amongst Tearjerkers: Critic Claims Games Won’t Make You Cry

Ever get teary-eyed when Yoshi ran away while you were riding him? Okay, maybe that’s a silly example, but, when I was a kid, I got pretty upset about it. Over the years my skin has become a little thicker, but games have also become a little deeper. And occasionally, I still feel a little choked up from time to time. Games have learned how to wrench a gut now better than before, but one naysayer thinks that the emotional extent of games never evolved past a Yoshi-escape.
