Study Shows Little Girls Now Made of Sugar, Spice, and Nintendo Wiis
So what are boys made of? Playstation 3s, apparently: so long as they’re at least 13. That’s according to a new survey by Habbo, an online community of creepy, virtual hotel rooms aimed at teenagers. Don’t ask.
Anyway. The survey, in its second year, found that overall 69% percent of the respondents—kids aged 11 to 18—ranked Sony’s machine number one, using super descriptive words like “good” and “great.” This was followed closely by the Wii with 64%, and the Xbox 360 at 58%. But, as alluded to, each console also came with a gender bias attached. Females overwhelmingly preferred the Wii, regardless of age; boys went for the 360 or PS3.
“As Sony and Xbox strive to broaden their consoles’ appeal, from hardcore to casual gamer, the results of the survey seem to indicate that gender, not previous gaming experience, determines console choice,” said Emmi Kuusikko, director of user and market insight at Sulake, the company behind Habbo.
What’s to account for this? It’s hard to say with out making very sweeping generalizations, but the survey seems to indicate that women fall more into the “casual” gaming niche. Now I’m not saying that women can’t be hardcore gamers, as I personally know of quite a few that would be happy to beat me up for claiming otherwise, but it’s hard to deny the numbers. Also, you have to admit, the Wii is pretty damn cute.
