Square Enix Tecmo: What Could Have Been

Square Enix tried with all its might to absorb Tecmo in the friendliest manner possible.  But, the apple of Tecmo’s eye was not Square Enix at all, but Koei, you know, the Dynasty Warrior people.  So while those two young kids go on to make games such as Ninja Dynasty Warrior, and Xtreme Beach Warriors, we can dream about what could have been.  It’ll be like that movie It’s a Wonderful Life

Finally, Square Enix would be able to announce a fighting game without it being followed by visions of the awkwardly spelled Ehrgeiz. It was fun for a while, but it lacked that certain addictive fighting formula. You can use Cloud’s meteor limit only so much before getting bored with it. Tecmo would have shared its secret of the Dead or Alive series with Square Enix for a fully fleshed out brawler for the possible console sequel to Dissidia.

The synergy of the two companies would shine through any video game disaster, and provide the perfect balance of action (courtesy Team Ninja) combined with RPG elements. It might have been the winning formula that brought life to the action RPG genre. Since both companies have a yin and yang combination of strengths and weaknesses, I suspect that any game churned out by the duo would be nearly flawless.

Can you imagine the possibilities? Ninja Gaiden with a gripping storyline and no camera problems. A high production Tecmo Bowl that out shines any Madden. A Dragon Quest game with stunning action elements. Kingdom Hearts with Ryu Hayabusa and a Dead or Alive world to visit; drool with me my friends.

Alas, our dreams are crushed by the merger that was not to be.  Though, now-a-days, merging companies has almost become routine, so perhaps all of these dreams will one day come true.
