Soma Games’ G: A Worthwhile Apple App Store Game

Soma Games G GotGameIt is well known that the iPhone has already established itself as the cell phone for this generation. At the same time, Apple’s iPod Touch became the mp3 player with its multi-functionality, essentially an iPhone-Lite. With major developers and publishers forced to cut staff and fiscal projections dramatically destroyed, there is a new bastion for many gamers – the independents and the Apple Apps Store. Soma Games is currently in the production of G, an iPhone game in the same element as Gravity Wars.

Chris Skaggs of Soma Games was nice enough to inform me about this new iPhone app scheduled for a Spring release, which may eventually be ported to other systems. With the touch function of the Apple products, it is easy to see the portability of this indie title to other venues.

G is an arcade game set in a futuristic Earth where the player builds and launches rockets to explore complex fields where obstacles, power-ups, and gravitational bodies interact with the rockets path. G means gravity, the primary functional elements in the game. By accounting for the pull provided by these bodies, the player can create looping rocket paths that bring a single rocket within radar range of multiple targets in a mission that earns extra points. The beautiful, artistic scenery, atmospheric music and stylized graphics lend and air of mystery to the game, and unique gaming features make G more interactive than other gravity simulators.

soma games g gotgameG is one of four games that Soma Games is developing. While it would be nice to see the title in action and release on PSN, Xbox Live, or PC before the Apple Apps Store, Soma Games is one of the developers who are not letting the current economic situation interfere with creativity. Hopefully the four games that Soma Games create will lead to more PC and console work.

Is that concept art or screen shots from the game?

  2. Chris P says:

Both screens are concept art. Though if they can get close to a cell shaded look, I think it’ll be an amazing app.

Hi GotGame.Com - this is CHris Skaggs from Soma Games (the third Chris in a row…).
First, thanks for picking us up on this site. As a new indie developer, this kind of thing means so much to us. It’s really encouraging to be noticed. :)
But I really wanted to drop in here and say that we’ve been talking about this game and I’ve made a decision that porting G and future games to the PC and X-Box is a no brainer. It’s something we really need to do.
So I can’t make any promises regarding timeline on that port (first learn crawl, fly later…) but it will definately happen…unless our office is creamed by a dark comet or something…

We are not leaking too many screen shots yet but here is an almost finished controls screen from the app.
