RTS Fans Rejoice!: World in Conflict ESL Tournament Starting in March
Some RTS fans might remember World in Conflict passing through their radar in 2007, or news regarding its delayed (though now soon to be released) expansion pack, World in Conflict: Soviet Assualt. Despite some of the larger RTS release titles hogging the main stage that year, like Command and Conquer 3, WIC received some fabulous reviews, awards, and has maintained a loyal fan base ever since. Announced on Thursday, ESL (Electronic Sports League) will be hosting a World Championship tournament for WIC — getting fans ready for the expansion’s supposed release date in March.
It’s true: pro gaming is somewhat intimidating — especially when watching players like Boxer micro manage with inhuman speed and precision. But with this particular competition, players of all skill levels have a choice on whether to enter into the serious or just-for-fun type of ladder. Matches will involve a 5 versus 5 “Domination” mode for either the Pro or Fun tournament, and teams must register through ESL before the games begin on March first.
Prizes for the Pro tournament are as follows:
1st Place: (5) Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition Processors + (5) 12-Month ESL Premium Accounts
2nd Place: (5) Intel Core i7 Processors + (5) 6-Month ESL Premium Accounts
3rd Place: (5) Intel Core i7 Processors + (5) 3-Month ESL Premium Accounts
Players of the Fun tournament will be given the chance to win World in Conflict merchandise, and the top three teams will receive premium accounts as well.
Either way, I guarantee you’ll be seeing a lot of skilled matches coming up in the next few weeks. Whether you’re a casual strategy gamer or subscribe to a strict RTS training regiment, make sure to stay tuned to World in Conflict’s upcoming tournament and release in March 2009.
