Gamer Culture

Canadians do it naked, in the bedroom, and at work.

Most Americans have probably done it at work or while they were in the bathroom at least once. Heck, I know a guy who got fired from his job because of it, and another who does it at least once a week on the throne. But Americans aren’t the only ones killing time at work or in more…private areas, by playing video games. Quite a few of our northern neighbors in Canada also like to answer two calls at once.

Oh Canada, we have shared much in common over the years: love for beer, ham, and maple syrup; our concepts of football; the world’s longest, undefended border; Alaska; Pamela Anderson. Now, thanks to a survey done by Microsoft Canada and Ipsos Canada, we can finally know more aboot Canadian gamers.

The survey consisted of one thousand Canadian adults who have internet access, and was meant to coincide with Canada Day. The survey must have asked some pretty bizarre questions, because it got some pretty bizarre answers. While some admitted to playing games at work (30%), in the bedroom (27%), in public (19%) and even in the bathroom (7%), a good deal also admitted to playing video games naked (with ‘in the bathroom’ only counting as partially naked). At least 17% of the men surveyed, or 1 out of every 5, admitted to playing a game in the nude, while only 9% of women admitted to the same. Try not to think about that next time you’re playing with your buddy from Canada on Xbox LIVE. The survey also found that 19% of Canadian men have played an MMO, compared to 5% of Canadian women. Incidentally, Canadian women are more inclined to play smaller online games (32%) and Facebook games (29%). So that female troll from Canada you like so much may in fact be a naked guy. But isn’t that always the case?

Except for the higher prices of books and magazines, Canada is a great place for gamers when you think about it. Aside from the famous and often harsh cold weather that could keep you indoors for weeks, some of the video game industry’s biggest developers have offices in Canada. Eidos, EA, and Ubisoft; all have a home in Canada. Some very popular games also originated in Canada, including Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Mass Effect. Canada also has one of the lowest population densities in the world, making online gaming an ideal way to communicate, connect, and play with others.

It wouldn’t surprise me if some of these numbers increase in the next few years, especially if the nude Canadian gamers get comfier chairs.
