Ever get teary-eyed when Yoshi ran away while you were riding him? Okay, maybe that’s a silly example, but, when I was a kid, I got pretty upset about it. Over the years my skin has become a little thicker, but games have also become a little deeper. And occasionally, I still feel a little choked up from time to time. Games have learned how to wrench a gut now better than before, but one naysayer thinks that the emotional extent of games never evolved past a Yoshi-escape.

Time has illustrated that video game movies are on the lower end of the movie-grading spectrum. As previously discussed by GotGame in “Tearing the Movie Stub” and “The Limits of Video Game Movies,” gamers despair when their favorite games leap from console to the big screen. With the new movie, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, releasing in early 2009, Steven de Souza, the director of the 1994 Street Fighter, hopes this new film does better.

The video game movie has never been an incredible success. Our favorite characters and storylines seem to lose something in translation to the big screen. This unfortunate time line started with the live-action Super Mario Bros. in 1993, and reached new lows with House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark and BloodRayne. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have potential.

Throughout the history of comic book movies, there are a few that have risen to the top. Yet, for the most part, the average comic book movie is…well, pretty average. Most comic book movies nowadays are better than your worst fears, but not as good as your highest hopes.

After the dust settled between the two relatively similar formats, HD-DVD and Blu-ray, it seemed like Blu-ray was the official winner. This seems contrary to conventional logic because adult film companies, by far the largest sellers of home video discs, almost roundly accepted HD-DVD as the new standard. So the only way Blu-ray could possibly have won without the support of porn companies is by bringing their product to a new market—but was that market really looking for another physical video format?

Batman. Spider-Man. Superman. No matter who your favorite is, there’s no denying that these three qualify as the three most well-known comic book characters of all time. Every one of them has seen highs and lows in virtually all forms of media: television, movies, video games, and the industry that originally spawned them, comic books. Looking towards the future, only one of the “Big 3″ has reached the status of top-tier entertainment in the realm of cinema: Batman. “Spider-Man 3″ disappointed, though it was by no means horrible. That same thing, sadly, cannot be said of the abysmally-behind-the-times “Superman Returns.” While Batman looks to continue his domination as King of the comics movie kingdom, there’s still plenty of time for the “Lesser 2″ to firmly reestablish their supremacy. Here’s how all three should approach this battle of awesomeness.

Electronic Arts has done it again, signing a three game development deal with director Zack Snyder. Snyder, best known for 300 and currently in the production of Watchmen, will be working on the titles from the beginning stages, similar to director Steven Spielberg’s EA deal. Spielberg also signed a three game deal, beginning with his recently released Boom Blox.

Gamer Culture, Movies, Star Wars
The Star Wars universe has experienced its fair share of developments in last ten years. What was once viewed as an untouchable storyline in the 1980s has evolved into a totally new kind of saga. Fans saw pristine acting and storylines driven by characters substituted with sappy love stories and special effects. Don’t get me wrong, the prequels had their moments, but I don’t think many would tell you they “wowed” them more than the original trilogy. So, yeah yeah, we’ve heard this before, you’re saying. Why all this talk about the prequels years after their release? Well, someone had to go and make the suggestion that Lucas Arts’ newest video game, The Force Unleashed, be made into a motion picture, and I just thought I’d be the first to say, hell no… unless they abide by my stipulations, of course.
