Nerds and Dating: 5 Ideas for the Perfect Date

So, you’re kind of a nerd (or dork, or someone who is “intellectually superior,” a geek, etc). And you like to date other nerds. That’s great. And let’s say you’ve got that wonderful significant other. So what do you do? What’s an ideal date for two such as yourselves?

Let me begin by saying there are several types of nerds. And all of them are awesome in their own way. We’ve got gaming geeks, anime fanatics, academic dorks, the socially awkward and even band geeks (yes, I know there are plenty more, but let’s focus on these). Each type of nerd has special needs and therefore their dates should be chosen accordingly.

Band Geeks: So you and your partner like to be a part of the school band, what would be the ideal date? Well, consider this: a gorgeous afternoon, a picnic and an outdoor concert. In most cities, you can find people playing music outdoors when it’s nice. So pack a lunch (your partner will appreciate the effort!), sit a bit in the back (maybe even bring a blanket) and listen to the music. If you’re feeling particularly romantic, and the music is appropriate, maybe even offer to dance. It’s a sweet effort, and any band geek should love it.

Socially Awkward: You’re not the most well-spoken person. In fact, you tend to be shy and awkward around people. So cater your ideal date around this fact. Consider going to a large concert (tons of fun with little social interaction) or even to the zoo. The zoo is an easy place to interact with your partner without having his/her full attention on you. And everyone loves a good zoo.

Anime Fanatic: You know if you’re in this category. You have a huge fascination with anime, manga , pretty much anything coming out of Japan, etc. So if you’re going on your ideal date, cater to that love. See if there are any Japanese shows (museum displays, art performances, etc) or anime fairs. If there’s not, first head to a Japanese restaurant (sushi and sake bombs… yum!) and then maybe take an art class together (there’s a lot of places that have one-hour classes) or learn how to spin knives. Chances are, it’s something you may not have done before and creativity is always a bonus.

Academic Dorks: You’re one of those people who appreciates everything intellectual in life. Math, science, probably even literature, computers, etc. So what can you do on your perfect date? Well, first of all, I recommend a nice dinner where you can share your beliefs. This could get heated, so try to behave. Then, take your date to somewhere they will appreciate: a poetry reading, an art museum (heck, any museum) or even a lecturer that you both are interested in. Your partner will appreciate that you’re making an effort to cater to both of your interests, and you can still be romantic at dinner and at a museum. And they do say poetry can fuel love.

Gaming Geeks: You love video games. And why wouldn’t you? They’re amazing. So your ideal date is just plain fun: take your partner to an arcade. I’m not talking about the new, fancy gaming cafes. No, I’m talking about the Pac-man and old school video game arcade. Play together, encourage each other (maybe even embarrass yourself with a bit of DDR), eat cotton candy and sodas. It would be fun and still romantic, and I can almost guarantee that your partner will love it. I would.

So there you have it: five date ideas for five different types of nerds. So celebrate your geekdom and have your perfect date!
