NeoTokyo: Half-Life 2 meets Anime-Inspired Sci-Fi
Fans of cult-classics such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell truly have something to look forward to this winter. No, I am not talking about the next Sakura-Con or the latest installment of scantalated manga. The recent interest of many PC gamers has been claimed by the upcoming Half-Life 2 mod, NeoTokyo. Its trailer was unveiled on December 14th, promising a swift beta release.
Set in the near future, NeoTokyo is an exciting shooter that revolves around the conflict between two factions: the National Security Forces (NSF) and the Jinrai, a rogue military syndicate. Having rapidly gained political and economic dominance, the futuristic Japanese government has splintered, resulting in a desperate struggle — with plenty of cyber-punk noir.

NeoTokyo's NSF Support Class
What sets itself apart from other mods of its field is NeoTokyo’s development team’s claim that it will be a “visceral & realistic combat experience.” Players will find dazzling environments of Blade Runner caliber — blinding corridors of neon and billboards that illuminate an oppressive corporate presence as they engage in scenarios familiar to many team-oriented shooters, such as team death match and “capture the ghost” (CTG). The latter has evolved to match the game’s specific direction; “ghost” refers to a hyper-intelligent android (synthetic human) that, once retrieved, helps its rescuer escape by relaying enemy positions.
A significant devotion to fast, cinematic action also really shows. NeoTokyo’s class-based system, dividing teams into recon, assault, or support roles, allows for an array of futuristic implants and gadgets, like motion-tracking and anime-influenced weaponry. A built-in squad system will allow players to easily coordinate their efforts. Even the highly-stylized look of the player models undoubtedly contributes to this sense of film-like immersion.

NeoTokyo's Jinrai Recon Class
Being a tactical shooter, NeoTokyo possesses a realistic damage system, but also seeks compromise. NT’s lead developer commented in the NeoTokyo forums that damage is “not quite as lethal as Rainbow Six, but less forgiving than. . . Counter-Strike.”
Upholding a key factor in the popularity of PC mods, NeoTokyo will be free for all owners of Half-Life 2 upon release. Drawing from its rich influences, NeoTokyo has the potential to push the limits of the cyber-punk gaming genre to a new level. Indeed, fans have much to look forward to if NeoTokyo lives up to its hype.
