NCsoft Sweeps Tabula Rasa Under the Rug

Tabula Rasa LogoIn their latest earnings report, NCsoft has apparently chosen to follow the time-honored “pretend I never got involved with that creepy artificially enhanced embarrassment, and maybe it’ll all just go away” strategy. I’ve got news for them: It didn’t work for David Hasselhoff’s herpes and it won’t work for the Tabula Rasa debacle either.

LB 2
The ailing MMO, from Ultima creator (and space tourist) Richard “Lord British” Garriot, blends FPS and RPG characteristics to create a sci-fi universe that, in the end, is about as visually appealing as the aforementioned venereal disease. The game play might be awesome, but it’s just not a place where you’d want to spend much time. Maybe that’s why, in the eight months since its much-hyped release, its community has declined to the point that, as massively.com reported, it merited just two minor and unfavorable mentions in a report that referred liberally to its sexier stepsisters, Lineage II and Guild Wars.

When NCsoft’s first quarter earnings report does mention Tabula Rasa, it’s not exactly inspiring. RGTR (Richard Garriot’s Tabula Rasa, easily the least catchy acronym this side of AWGTHTGTTSA- no, I did not make that up), is fast following in the footsteps of scrapped NCsoft MMO, Auto Assault. In Q1, sales dropped 63% from the previous quarter, while other major NCsoft offerings held steady with sales figures dwarfing RGTR.

RGTR!
NCsoft’s CFO, Lee Jae-Ho, confirmed this lack luster performance, saying “We are not making any profit, I shall admit, from this Tabula Rasa operation,” in the NCsoft Q1 earnings call. NCsoft remains optimistic, but is not releasing any numbers that might justify even a halfway rosy outlook for the title.

It’s possible that RGTR’s no-show in the latest financials is just a momentary pause while Lord British and friends get their act together, and the game will be as popular as Hasselhoff’s rock band in Germany… but, I wouldn’t bet the farm just yet.

need to bring back tabula rasa

  2. Narishma says:

Not visually appealing? Are you retarded? You obviously either never played the game, or need a cornea transplant. Among all mmos released to date, Tabula Rasa had some of the best visuals of them all.

  3. Clint Hay (Marmbo) says:

I Agree with Narishma completely! The game was very visually appealing, much more so than other MMO’s I’ve been trying to play lately. Everything else feels so slow and tired. Tabula Rasa was like driving a formula one car, all the other MMO’s are like driving a go-kart.. Sure it’s stil fun but, its no F1 Car. No ther MMO has held my interest for more than a week, I enjoyed TR from Beta to the very final second it closed.

  4. Ghost says:

One of the best MMOs I have ever played and unique compared to the rest of the crap out there. NC kicked it out a little too early, had crap advertizement and not enough unlockable content to keep a player playing, even though I only got the chance to play it for the last month I enjoyed every minute of it, and still miss it every day. I pray NC will at least open a free server a Single player type, or something in the future. Maybe Tabula Rasa II? Doubtful, but we all can dream.

  5. saywhat says:

You pretty much lost all credability at “not visually appealing”.

  6. Metablo says:

They HAVE to bring back Tabula Rasa. It was the most awesome MMO ever. Clearly it needed to get some work done (latency problems were uncool), but MAN was it hot. I don’t understand why they just work less on it. That would have kept the costs down, wouldn’t it? So many ways to keep it alive, and they just drop it. What a shame!

  7. Chris Brown says:

Are you High? you do not use “not visually appealing” when talkin about Tabula Rasa. It was clearly a great game and wouldve outdone Wow AND LoTR had NC put alot more work into it. damn i hate when a good game goes *poof* BRING IT BACK!!!!
