Strange Bedfellows: EA enlists Epic Games & Grasshopper Manufacture
EA is intent on altering the perception of its seemingly soulless, monopolistic publishing practices by…snatching up the rights to more games? OK, so maybe the juggernaut won’t be changing anyone’s mind with its recent rush towards signing new development partners, but at least EA is making some intriguing choices. Its most recent partnerships are with Epic Games and Grasshopper Manufacture. Surprised? Join the club.
The biggest shocker is the deal with Grasshopper Manufacture, a small Japanese developer with two big names behind it: Shinji Mikami, creator of the Resident Evil series, and Goichi Suda, better known as Suda51, the maniac behind the mind blower Killer7 and recent Wii cult hit No More Heroes. While Grasshopper is not exactly a AAA developer (yet), EA certainly sees its potential. Looking at the team’s track record of gory, disturbing, and offbeat titles, gamers are in for a treat.
Working with western developer Epic Games makes much more sense for EA, especially in light of Epic’s massive success on the Xbox 360, thanks in large part to its uber-violent shooter, Gears of War. Although nothing official has been announced as far as what game EA will publish, expect a new IP. It’s doubtful that Microsoft would stand by and let the rights to future Gears of War titles slip away. Mike Capps, President of Epic, didn’t say much about the future release, but promised, “You guys are really going to dig it.” Yes, we will, Mike - yes, we will.
