Majesco Entertainment Announces Wii sequel to A Boy and his Blob
Retro gaming fans and jellybean aficionados alike rejoice. Today Majesco Entertainment announced a Nintendo Wii sequel to the NES classic A Boy and his Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia. The game’s development corresponds with the original’s 20th anniversary and will feature hand-drawn and painted animation technology. The game is being developed by WayForward, which developed Contra 4 and Shantae.
“When A Boy and his Blob first appeared in 1989, it captured the imagination of gamers everywhere with its heartwarming storyline and unique gameplay,” said Gui Karyo, Executive Vice President of Operations, Majesco Entertainment. “Twenty years later, we are proud to bring an updated - yet still charming - reimagining of this beloved title to a new generation of Wii players.”
The plot of the new A Boy and his Blob shares elements with the original: An evil emperor has seized the throne of Blobolonia and a lone blob escapes, crashing on Earth and befriending a boy. The two then set out to liberate Blobolonia from this evil emperor, but first they have to get off of Earth. Gameplay revolves around feeding the blob varieties of jellybeans, each flavor of which transforms the blob into some tool or shape that can be used by the boy to overcome adversaries and puzzles.
The original NES game featured a wide-open side-scrolling environment and required the player to collect a large amount of treasures before blasting off to Blobolonia. The Wii version A Boy and his Blob will differ slightly in this regard. The game will remain true to its side scrolling, puzzle-solving, jelly-bean munching roots but is said to contain forty levels rather than an open-ended Earth and Blobonia the way the original did.
As far as blob forms go, the game will feature old favorites like the Licorice Ladder and the Tangerine Trampoline but will also incorporate new flavorful tools like the Bubble Gum Bubble and the Caramel Cannon. The inclusion of the Bubble Gum Bubble may offend fans of cola products but might also mean players won’t use up all of their lives trying to get one underwater treasure surrounded by spikes…
A Boy and his Blob will be released in 2009.
