Lego Indiana Jones Swings to the Top of the UK Sales Charts

Indy BoulderAfter six long weeks, a new gaming juggernaut has knocked GTA IV from its lofty perch at the top of the UK sales charts. What game finally had enough juice to take out the fastest-selling game in recorded history? Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, of course! Who would have expected anything different? As the old saying goes, show me a bunch of plastic toys with no logical link to computer gaming reenacting 20-year-old movies and I’ll show you the best selling game in the United Kingdom!

There’s no obvious reason for Lego to be a major player in computer gaming. Sure, just about everyone has at least a few Legos sucked up into their vacuum cleaner bag or ground into their carpet somewhere, but brand recognition alone doesn’t guarantee success. After all, just about everyone who’s ever even touched a computer game has a copy of the Matrix too, and you’ve probably noticed just how well that particular brand’s popularity translated into The Matrix Online sales, or lack thereof.

Lego’s foray into the gaming world has succeeded for the same reasons that vanilla’s foray into the ice creaming world was so dominant: It’s harmlessly enjoyable and makes folks comfortable no matter what mocha-fudge-bubblegum-ripple madness is taking hold everywhere else. Lego Indiana Jones sits on the shelf next to zombies, goblins and whatever the hell Psyduck is, effectively hollering to every passing customer: Look! Your kids will be totally stoked because I’m a video game, yet you won’t feel like a huge dork when you’re hauling me through the checkout counter! In fact, you might even recognize my blocky features and wacky clamp hands from your own childhood!

As Lego’s gaming domination continues, don’t be surprised to see even more publishers following the already-successful format. Grand Theft Auto V: Hot Wheels Edition coming soon to a GameStop near you!
