Gamers are Lazy: Stereotype or Statement of Truth?

The stereotypical persona of a gamer is all too familiar and can be summed up with one word. Lazy. It’s the classic sit back and relax with a box of cold pizza, and nothing to do but game all day. So, is this a far-fetched stereotype or simply a sad statement of truth? Having a younger brother who barely blinks during an Xbox game, I vouch for the statement of truth. And here’s why.

The majority of gamers often stay up really late (to obviously play WoW or some other highly addicting game) and as a result sleep in, a lot. The late nights typically consist of comfy chairs, loud music, food delivery, and poor posture. If it’s not delivery, a quick carb-based meal is the best alternative. In regards to bad posture, either slouching in front of a computer screen or sinking into a sunken-in couch is inevitable. According to a recent health report, adolescents spend an average of six hours a day in front of either a computer, television, or portable gaming system which can lead to numerous health problems. Ouch, how unfortunate. Talk about a reality check for the hardcore gamers out there.

For many gamers, “screen time” is almost a full-time job that could lead to obesity, diabetes, and other issues. Heavy late night meals followed by serious couch sitting is practically begging your arteries to be clogged. In the United States, the obesity rates for preschool-aged children and adolescents has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Similarly in Canada, twenty-six percent of Canadian children are overweight or obese.

Not to say that all gamers are fat slobs. I happen to know a handful of gamers and come to think of it, no one strikes me as overweight. In fact, my stick-skinny brother is nothing but athletic. Perhaps for the already-skinny-gamers, their late night junk will kick’em in the ass years later. Regardless of the ongoing stereotypes and your current health situation, a combination (gamer or no gamer) of exercise and healthy eating is extremely important, especially if you want to live a long and healthy life.

So while gaming, make an effort to designate some get-off-the-couch, store-the-pizza, and get-active style breaks. You will thank yourself in the long run. Besides, the next level of WoW can wait. And if it can’t, get a life.
