Fallout 3 Raising Level Cap in March
Eurogamer asked all the right questions when they were given the opportunity to sit down with Jeff Gadiner, one of the producers of Fallout 3 at Bethesda Game Studios and lead producer of all of its downloadable content, and chat about the upcoming DLC Operation: Anchorage. In the midst of the interview, Gardiner spoke briefly on plans to raise the level cap of the game from twenty to thirty in another DLC called Broken Steel, and in doing so, taking away the game’s ending:
“Level 20 is plenty tough. But we felt there’s no harm in letting the player enjoy the game as long as they’d like, and so along with removing the game’s ‘ending’ with Broken Steel, we figure raising the level cap would allow them to do that. We plan on raising it to level 30 - but it will be a long, hard climb to get there!”
Eurogamer also reminded Gardiner of the various consumer reactions to premium DLC, reminding the producer about Oblivion’s shortfall, to which he stated, “Well, we’re not making more Horse Armour!”

Glimpsing at several forum boards dedicated to discussions of Fallout 3, many fans were quite annoyed by the ending, including myself, as players were unable to continue their game past the climactic event. Broken Steel will be sure to get gamers picking up the controller and trekking through the wasteland of Washington D.C. once more. But that will be in March. Luckily, Bethesda plans to release DLC by the month, a good marketing idea if I ever saw one.
Bethesda recently released the G.E.C.K., an official editor available only for the PC version, back in December. Operation Anchorage is scheduled to be released in January, followed by The Pitt in February, and finally, Broken Steel in March. They will be available for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game.
