DJ Gameboy Remix
So, I’m kind of a gaming nerd. And I hunt music like zebra on the African plains. So when I come across the fusion of the two, I can’t help but smile. And by smile, I mean nerd out in my headphones in public places and periodically force people on the metro to enjoy my true geek music. And right now, you are on my metro-car, so listen to this. And, no, I’m not the one that smells like pee.
Say what you will about Starbucks coffee, but they do have some of the weirdest people in there and working there. Now, this is coming from someone that knows he’s odd, but, dude, those Sbux people have got me beat by a mile. Anyway, a few weeks ago, after a barista finished showing me some particularly poorly performed magic tricks, he sat back down at his laptop (it was a very, very slow day at Starbucks). He had one more trick to show me.
And I have to admit, this one impressed me: Jamendo. Jamendo is a music website dedicated to artists that publish their music under the Creative Commons License. Most of it was crap, but I was immediately struck by Pornophonique (and yes, it was because porn was in the name). But also, in the first few seconds I heard the distinct sound of an old school Gameboy game I couldn’t quite place my finger on. And after a little longer, I swear I heard Ms. Pacman die. Yep, the Pornophonique’s music uses 8-bit games as instruments in their techno-grungy music.
The music is really good… and it’s free. So, I suggest everyone drop by and have a listen to Pornophonique. Having good music with old familiar sounds is something akin to playing a game through the third or fourth time and finding all the Easter eggs. The songs are full of sounds from all the old games. And it’s good stuff. Now stop cowering in the corner of the train! I’m not gonna tell you again that it’s not me that peed on my leg. I don’t know who did that.
