DDR the Musical Promises Soap Stars, Free Beer, and Maybe Some Dancing

I warned you this would happen. Okay, maybe I vaguely implied it. The fact of the matter is that another video game franchise is getting ready to hit the stage as a musical. This time, it’s everybody’s favorite rhythm game that got gamers off their butts to experience Japanese pop music, Dance Dance Revolution. Curse you, High School Musical! Your ability to instill the desire to create musicals will not cease!

In the latest endeavor to both save Broadway and milk video game franchises via some other media format, Les Freres Corbusier is producing a stage musical inspired by Dance Dance Revolution. The cast will feature 40 people, including As The World Turns star Van Hansis.

Les Freres Corbusier may just be the right team to produce such a musical, as their previous works include a show titled A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant and Heddatron, a play based on Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, featuring robots in half the roles. Don’t worry, I’ve never heard of it, either.

Here’s the premise:

“In a futuristic Orwellian society where dancing is illegal, a group of local street toughs harbor no hope of overthrowing the fascistic no-fun government - until a mysterious dance prophet named Moonbeam Funk arrives.

“Loosely based on the wildly popular videogame, Dance Dance Revolution [the musical] is like Footloose set in the future - but kind of scarier, and with 40 really attractive, barely clothed young actors and buckets of free beer.”

No word if that free beer is for the cast or the audience. Even so, this sounds just a little too “fabulous” for me. I’ll pass. But if you’re still interested, the show runs from December 3 through December 20 at the Ohio Theater in New York City. Tickets are $18.00 for general admission and you can buy them online now.

As for me, I’m going to get drunk and smash anything and everything that reminds me of High School Musical with a baseball bat. That’s about the experience they’re aiming for, right?
