Video Game Crossovers: Some Are Actually Welcome

Video game crossovers have a low success rate, like less than 25%…okay, worse. Imperial stormtroopers shoot better by comparison. This doesn’t mean there isn’t potential for a good game crossover. I think great games could be created if developers got a little creative, put some copyright issues aside, and most importantly, listen to what gamers want.

Now, I’ve had crossover ideas before, but these ideas aren’t completely mine; some have been floating out there in the gamer community for a while. So if we ever want to see them, we need to keep talking about them. Well, let’s keep the ball rolling.

We can dream...we can dream

We can dream...we can dream.

Jak & Clank, Ratchet & Daxter - Naughty Dog and Insomniac have always had a friendly rivalry with each other, and the Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank games have competed for gamers’ attention with many not favoring one over the other. So why can’t they work together? Or perhaps the two teams could swap partners? It would still mean lots of weird and awesome weapons that could still provide a large, and very satisfying, boom.

Nintendo Hero - I know a fellow GotGame writer has suggested we “cut off the legs” of genre-jumping series, but (as Graham pointed out) Mario seems to have jumped genres with relative success. Since Mario has already done the dancing side of rhythm games, why couldn’t he or any other Nintendo characters form a band? Games like Wii Music and Samba de Amigo show that Nintendo is looking beyond both Guitar Hero and Rock Band to provide rhythm games, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a rhythm game with a Smash Brothers style line-up was already in the works. I’ve always believed that Link has had a desire…nay, a yearning, to ROCK. Think Donkey Konga but with a guitar controller and featuring the Mario crew or Link. And I’m not the only one who thinks this is a good idea.

Dynasty Warriors: KOTOR - One nice thing about Knights of the Old Republic being set so long ago in Star Wars history is that it leaves plenty of room to play with continuity and not ruin the future (thank the force for writer’s conveniences). This means Koei could pretty much create new characters and battle scenarios in their famous Dynasty Warriors-style to delight Star Wars fans and über-Star Wars fans alike. So what if Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker, and Darth Vader fighting side-by-side makes no sense; it would still be freakin’ cool. I’m also interested to see what Japanese game designers could do with the Star Wars universe.

We's-a going to-a Japan?

We-za gonna go-za to Japan?

Haloid - 100% not my work, this video (which many of you may have already seen) shows just how cool a Metroid and Halo crossover could be. No, I don’t know why Master Chief is a girl. Why are you even complaining?
