City of Villains: For the Evil in All of Us

There is a little bit of evil in everyone. It’s a fact. And, if you’re anything like me, when you play certain video games, you enjoy making the morally wrong choices. In games like Fable or Grand Theft Auto, it’s fun to do evil things. But in those games, your evil character is still somewhat of a hero. And that’s where City of Villains comes in. It’s about time someone let us take down the heroes.

For those of you who don’t know, City of Villains is the expansion to (or rather, the newer version of) the popular City of Heroes. Now, although playing a superhero MMORPG sounded like fun to me, I was by far more intrigued with the expansion. After all, the only thing better than playing a superhero is playing a supervillain. But I’m sure most of you have heard of it; after all, it did come out about three years ago. But in the spirit of devilish dress-up, let’s take a look at a less terrifying version of evil in games.

Despite its age, City of Villains still deserves your time and consideration now. Though it isn’t nearly as popular as WoW (then again, not much is), it is still a great MMORPG. Like WoW and many other MMOs, you do have to pay a monthly fee ($15 USD for one month), but it’s a decent price to pay for a game that has so much content and that features a continuing storyline. And that fee allows you to play both City of Heroes and City of Villains, so you can indulge your good and evil halves.

The main complaint most people have with the game is that the missions and PvP are a bit too straightforward and repetitive. I find this happens with a lot of MMOs, so it doesn’t really bother me. And if you do choose to be a villain, the choices you make don’t reflect the malice you would like to see out of a truly evil character. But that’s just a small downside to the game.

The combat system is challenging, though not overwhelming, making the game extremely interesting for me. Also, I absolutely love to customize my character and the headquarters. You get to kidnap people, destroy things, and basically meddle with the good guys. And it’s always fun to give into my dark side.

So if you want to play a fun MMORPG, but don’t want to become addicted to WoW, I highly recommend checking out City of Villains. It’s a great game. And it’s close to Halloween, so get in the spirit and be something that you’re not. Or something you really wish you could be, deep down inside.

After all, we are all a little bit evil. And I love it.
