Champions Online: Omega System Speculation Run Amok
On June 6th, a “cryptic” message arrived on a Champions Online development blog, mentioning a feature called the Omega System. Since that time, speculation has run rampant as game enthusiasts try to ascertain what this new addition could possibly be. We do know that the Omega System has to do with the endgame for the single player component of the MMORPG and that it will be possible to play through the game in single-player mode. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours. Not to say that we aren’t willing to fan the flames…
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Champions Online, here’s a little refresher: Champions is being designed by Cryptic Studios, the same company that brought you City of Heroes and City of Villains. This is the first title that they will develop and publish since leaving the friendly confines of NCsoft. Developed as an MMORPG, the game is tentatively scheduled for release in 2009. Like the company’s earlier projects, you will play as a self-designed superhero with endless amounts of customizable options, including costume selections and superpowers. Unlike the game’s virtual predecessors, the settings vary wildly and include the shining skyscrapers of Millennium City, the frozen wastelands of Canada, the gladiatorial arena on the Moon, the hidden underwater city of Lemuria, and the foul, mystical dimension known as Qliphotic. Try saying that three times fast.

As for theories on the Omega System, forums across the net have exploded with speculation. Some think it could be an in-game system for developing the ultimate arch-villain; others say a dooms-day device; and others still, a specialized single player-only quest. But let’s look at what we know before throwing out half baked predictions: Before even addressing the Omega System, Cryptic’s Jack Emmert goes to great lengths to articulate how important it was for the company to add a complete single-player element. Cryptic has long been known for extreme dedication to its fan base. Who doesn’t remember the first time that they played City of Heroes and thought, “Wow, it would be fun to play as the bad guy?” Not to mention the numerous patches that have added new features and quests for both of their previous games.
Traditionally, MMORPGs such as Everquest and WoW have tailored their endgame scenarios for large raiding parties. A party needs X number of healers, Y number of DPS, Z number of tanks in order to successfully defeat the enemies. What if the Omega System turns this paradigm on it head and takes into account the point allotment and powers of your character, and dynamically creates a group of enemies that cater to your character’s weaknesses? The Omega System would finally flesh out the single-player experience in MMORPGs, giving Cryptic’s fans another reason to tout their game over the competition and potentially make Champions Online a new “It” game.
What does all this mean in the grand scheme of things? Not much, until we hear more as the game nears completion. But judging by the developer’s comment that this feature is almost finished, we shouldn’t have to wait too long for an answer.
