Can Anything Stop Colbert?
This week, it was announced that Harmonix would provide another free downloadable song with Rock Band- namely, Stephen Colbert’s hit “Charlene (I’m Right Behind You).” Yes, that’s right, the man is a force to be reckoned with: not only is he a TV personality, a former presidential candidate, and a writer, but now he’s also a music god featured on a hit video game. Can anything stop Stephen Colbert?
So what more can a man who (in three short years) has already done so much do? He has spiders, ice cream and even a Hungarian bridge named after him, a number one book, TV show, and a whole nation following him. And now, with his Rock Band song, Colbert could potentially gain the support of another large cultural group: the gaming community.
I mean, think of the possibilities: an entire game based on The Colbert Show, or even just Colbert himself. The game could target all of his accomplishments, from gaining his own TV show to the White House. The challenges could include political trivia and beating other celebrities in contests (like the “Metaphor-Off” with Sean Penn), all while gaining fans and slowly taking over the world.
Considering how large (and international) Colbert’s following is, it could be a hit.
Then again, it could be a disaster. I’m prone to believe in Colbert because I find him to be hilarious. Of course, celebrities have had “hit” songs before–like Adam Sandler’s “Chanukah Song” or the majority of William Shatner’s songs. But none of them have been featured in Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Is Harmonix favoring Colbert because of his new “it” status, or is it more than that? Is it that more “joke” songs could be featured on our favorite video games—a la “Trogdor” and “Still Alive”—or is it just that Colbert is unstoppable?
I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether or not anything can stop Colbert. But I’m on board for when he takes over the world.
