Bringing Back the Classics: Golden Eye: Source
It’s quite difficult to describe how legendary GoldenEye 007 was, is, and forever shall be. Everyone who owned a Nintendo 64 in the 90’s either had a copy or wanted one. Truly, it was one the earliest first-person shooters to gain such a wide spectrum of fans, becoming a household name overnight. Though its halcyon days are all but over, a team of mod designers have been hard at work on GoldenEye: Source, the new Half-Life 2 mod that seeks to pay tribute to this epic shooter. Released last week on February 6th, Beta 3 of GoldenEye: Source has already shown to be quite promising.

Boris is back! (And now even nerdier in GoldenEye: Source)
Using Valve’s acclaimed Source engine, GE:S remains true to the original, but also takes the game in a new direction — seeing as how technology and the FPS genre have changed a lot since 1997. Speaking on this subject, its development team admits that they do not wish to “…recreate the game exactly how it was in GE64.” Rather, “We are here to take the game even further[,] but at the same time provide a lot of those fun elements that hardcore GE64 fans will enjoy.”
Like other Half-Life 2 mod giants like Dystopia, Natural Selection 2 (though not Source-powered anymore), or even Zombie Panic!: Source, GoldenEye: Source has gained quite a following. The team’s development approach seems to be working out quite well — and we’re only at the beta stages of this mod. Fans appear to be enjoying its progress and, although seeming quite nostalgic for the days of rumble paks and split-screen multiplayer, remain in awe with GoldenEye 007’s reincarnation.
GoldenEye: Source is free to all those sporting a copy of Half-Life 2 and cures most N64 withdrawal symptoms that gamers are known to experience from time to time. So, give it a try!
