Blizzard and Fans Team up to Support a Great Cause

Recently claiming to have 11.5 million subscriptions to World of Warcraft, Blizzard has achieved an almost indestructible position in the gaming industry. Yet, this past week has shown Blizzard’s more compassionate side. On December 28th, Blizzard teamed up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to offer their fans a chance to win a lifetime subscription to World of Warcraft, while supporting an end to cancer.

If fans donate twenty-five dollars or more to the LLS, their names will be entered into a raffle on January 8th. The initial fundraising goal was set to five-thousand dollars, with three one-year paid subscription prizes to the first three names pulled. Yet, if donations exceed fifty-five hundred dollars, a life-time subscription will be awarded to one more special winner.

Now past the deadline of January 5th, fans have donated over thirty-four thousand dollars to the cause, showing that WoW players care about other things than raids or Tier 7 armor — even if their level 80 death knight creates a different impression.

Perhaps this act of beneficence will combat any concerns regarding Blizzard’s power-hungry intentions in the world of video games. After all, Blizzard’s efforts work to remind us that there is indeed a world outside of Azeroth.

Stay tuned to find out who the lucky winner of a lifetime subscription to World of Warcraft is on Thursday. Hopefully whoever it may be remains committed to the MMO lifestyle in the future; but if not, at least they made a difference in the present.
