Game Design, Nintendo DS
We can finally get our hands on (through import) Nintendo’s newest iteration of their super-popular portable, the DSi. But before we get caught up in all the shiny-shiny newness hype (TWO cameras!!!), it’s worth noting that not all the DS games introduced so far have managed to use the current DS’s features. Plenty stopped innovating with two screens, or took a big punt and used the extra screen as a map or character info screen; some barely even used the DS’s innovative touch screen. There are two new releases for the DS and the Wii, and two more on the horizon. Even as a serious pretend farmer, my stamina is running low.

Headlines, PC
In the lead-up to the much anticipated release of Spore, I wondered to myself why the only gameplay demos we saw were of the cell and creature stage. I should have seen it coming.
Sure, the early part’s fun, with very simple and user-friendly kill-or-be-killed mechanics. But why didn’t I see clips from the much-lauded Space stage?
When you finally reach it, Space seems great—it’s very bright and very shiny; there’s plenty more to do, see and explore in comparison to the previous chapters. But that comparison should hint to the fact that there’s just not much of a game here.
