Jaw-Dropping Upcoming Exclusive Games: A Reason to Console-Splurge

Have you, for one reason or another, not bought a new-gen console yet? Well, it’s perhaps understandable—there are plenty of PC-only gamers, and for good reason—the most graphics-intense, most gigantic (MMORPGs!) games can be found on PC. There are also some of us who are just poor. But you want a reason to hold that controller lovingly. And good games are certainly not just about top-notch graphics and processing. Just which controller you choose remains to be seen. Here are GotGame’s “Jaw-Dropping Upcoming Exclusive Games: Reasons to Splurge on… (InsertConsoleHere).”

Olympic Video Games: Gold Medals or Disqualifications?

In celebration of 8.8.08, we have compiled a list of Olympic video games, former and current, to rival the Olympics themselves..! At least, maybe in spirit. Whether any game can really capture the excitement and international love-everyone-but-we-want-to-win feel of the Olympics, I don’t know. But here’s some that tried.

LittleBigPlanet is very, very big

Maybe you’re a little bored of the pre-scripted, narrative-heavy, feats of storytelling that are the hallmarks of many popular games that contain a lot of depth. Sometimes you just want to platform, so you bust out your old copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 and completely ditch the real world. Well, what could be better than combining that “comfort food platforming” with control over the entire world you’re playing in? LittleBigPlanet promises just that, putting the tools—and the materials—in your hands to not only jump in glee, but move arms and heads, grab objects and textures, and best of all, play with friends.

Resident Evil: A Real Video Game Movie?

Ever since Lucasfilm Games’ 1987 title, Maniac Mansion, heralded one of the first uses of cut scenes, video games have veered towards the cinematic. With this similarity to films and the almost “interactive movie” nature of many popular video games today—Metal Gear Solid series, Final Fantasy, GTA, and Resident Evil 4—there’s no doubt that the game industry is making the transition to film, not just the other way around. We know the Resident Evil Hollywood movies. But what happens when you take the classic “zombie movie” rubric and base it on a video game based on the undead? Somebody gets confused, and—perhaps—magic happens. More on Resident Evil: Degeneration after the cut.

Active Life for Wii: Getting Gamers Off the Couch

activelifefamilyActive Life (known as Wii Family Trainer in Japan), a game from Namco Bandai due out September 2008, is bringing the Power Pad back. The revival floormat has 6 sensor arrows on it, and is multiplayer-ready right out of the box. But will it be competition for WiiFit? With a slogan like “Get off your couch, get into the game,” and a very specific target demographic, it might further open up the Wii as a family-oriented, fitness-friendly console.

Fat Princess: Does What Skinny Princesses Won’t

fatprincessWhat’s the best kind of princess? Well, there are two schools of thought. “Fat Princess,” the new Darkstar Industries video game coming out for PS3, glorifies the princess, as usual, and makes her the object of rescue. However, she does not do anything but eat and get progressively larger, making it more difficult for the opposing team to…rescue/haul her to victory. Capture the flag with Fatty as flag, if you will.

Sociotown: Plays well with others

sociotownIn SocioTown, the latest MMO from Outside the Box, developers are putting an entirely new spin on defining your own game. In fact, they’re letting you define exactly who can and cannot occupy your game space–and quickly. With the choice to toss out, punch out, or bat out any offending players, you don’t need a second thought or even a reason for being rude. If WoW implemented some similar immediate-batting abilities say, for funeral crashers, maybe the world of MMOs would be a happier, or rather more mournful, place.
