5 Games That Would Be Better with a Portal Gun

There are few certainties in gaming: extra lives, “game over” screens, and saving the princess.  It’s time to add one more to that short list.  The addition of the gun from Portal would drastically alter any game (for the better, of course), so why not help struggling developers who can’t seem to come up with new game play mechanics?  Here’s a list of games that would benefit greatly from the inclusion of a portal gun — GLADoS (sadly) not included.

Strange Bedfellows: EA enlists Epic Games & Grasshopper Manufacture

EA is intent on altering the perception of its seemingly soulless, monopolistic publishing practices by…snatching up the rights to more games?  OK, so maybe the juggernaut won’t be changing anyone’s mind with its recent rush towards signing new development partners, but at least EA is making some intriguing choices.  Its most recent partnerships are with Epic Games and Grasshopper Manufacture. Surprised? Join the club.

5 Features We Want in ‘Wii 2′

Nintendo’s ubiquitously popular Wii has been tearing up sales charts and one-upping the competition for the last two years.  However, the world doesn’t stop spinning just because you’re #1.  It’s safe to say that the creative minds at Nintendo are feverishly dreaming up its next console, and if the company’s drastic shift towards casual gaming and motion controls is any indication, the Wii’s successor will undoubtedly deliver something unique and fresh.  Sure, it’s probably a few years off, but that didn’t stop us from brainstorming our very own list of what we’d like to see in the Big N’s Wii follow-up.

Does EA have its eye on Valve?

EA is no stranger to acquisitions.  The monolithic mega-corporation has been snatching up other gaming companies for years, much to the chagrin of gamers and the satisfaction of stockholders.  As a result, EA has earned an unflattering reputation specifically among its detractors as a big, bad monopoly - similar to how some think of Microsoft’s computer business.  Unsurprisingly, EA could have a new target in mind: Valve.  Known for its epic Half Life series, the creative giant isn’t exactly prolific.  Could this change if they set up shop under the enormous EA banner?  Or will the next Portal game feature burly linebackers tackling each other through tears in the time-space continuum while John Madden mumbles lethargically?  Wait…that actually sounds kind of cool.

Nintendo’s Controller No-No Could Cost Millions

It’s a good thing the Wii and DS print money, as Nintendo may be forced to dip into its colossal coffers. The company known for its innovative and unique controllers was recently pwned (again) for patent infringement by Anascape, Ltd. with an assist by our renowned court system. The allegedly illegal controllers in question are the Gamecube, Wavebird, and Wii Classic controllers. What does this mean for Nintendo? Should gamers rush out to buy up these contraband controllers before they’re pulled from shelves? Didn’t this exact same thing happen to a different console giant?

Mega Man 9 and the Retro Revival

1080p resolution. Bloom lighting. Normal mapping. 8-bit graphics? The latest wave of consoles is more high tech than ever, but old-school gaming is surprisingly still in vogue. All three next-gen consoles offer services that celebrate the best of our gaming heritage. A pleasant side effect of this dedication to preserving past classics has been a retro revival; re-releasing older titles is just the tip of the warp pipe. Leave it to long-time industry trendsetter Capcom to rock the retro boat by announcing that Mega Man 9 is being built from the ground up for the Wii, 360, and PS3 in glorious 8-bit. Commence cheering, gaming geezers – everything old is new again.

Got Girls? Gaming’s Demographic Expands

“You were beat by a girl!” It’s a schoolyard line we’ve all heard, primarily uttered to ridicule both the guys who lost and the girls who won. With the growing popularity of gaming amongst women, that playground taunt has taken on a new meaning, adopted by the self-professed gamer girls and spoken with pride. Don’t expect these video game vixens to go easy on you just because you have mesmerizing man-junk; they play to win. And sure, guy gamers are overly eager to hurl vicious, misogynistic insults thanks to the anonymity of the internet, but that doesn’t change the fact that girl gamers are here to stay (and pwn).

Fragging on the Go - Doom for the iPhone (hopefully)?

Legendary game designer John Carmack’s next big game may be smaller than you’d expect. The guy who put id Software on the map with gory romps like Doom and Quake is leading the iPhone gaming charge, intent on tapping into the uber-phone’s burgeoning market. What made the father of first-person shooters and one of the minds behind the upcoming 360/PS3/PC title, Rage, turn his bespectacled-gaze to the portable gaming market?
