VotD: Garbage Day

I’m not going to lie: I didn’t spend all my time in college going to class and studying. And no, the rest of the time wasn’t spent partying non-stop, either (though it was easily an option, considering most of our school was made up of frats with school-assigned beer allowances). A lot of nights were spent “writing papers,” or, browsing the internet for about five hours before actually writing a paper. That was when YTMND.com and PoeTV began to take center stage as two of the greatest time wasters ever invented. And that was when Garbage Day made its first of many, many subsequent appearances.

Where: Winter WonderLAN / When: This Weekend / Who: All The Cool Kids

Winter WonderLAN LogoI’m pretty sure I know what you’re up to this weekend. Avoiding studying for finals, ignoring your family in true pre-Christmas hermit-spirit, and getting some serious gaming on. You’ve got a lot of great titles to catch up on before the fat man brings you a half dozen more. And if you live in the San Francisco area, you have the chance to do so en masse this weekend, thanks to Ascendancy Gaming’s Winter WonderLAN 2008.

VotD: Baby Kittens Come Out Of Hiding

Nothing’s cuter than a baby kitten. Except maybe an army of kittens, charging your video camera in all their mewing glory. I have to imagine after they pass our field of vision, they melded together to form a kitten Voltron of rainbow happiness, melting everything in sight with its adorabeam.™

VotD: Mario Kart Love Song

For some reason, every time I need a piece of creative genius for Video of the Day lately, something super-schmoopy presents itself and demands to be shared. Enter: the Mario Kart Love Song. With a surprisingly catchy and soothing melody, lyrics both touching and nerdgasmic, and a singer/songwriter wearing a yarn Waluigi ’stache taped to his face, you have no reason to not hit play. And again. Let’s go again.

VotD: Werewolf Bar Mitzvah

Thanks to the NXE and streaming Netflix videos, I’ve been introduced to, become acquainted with, and fallen madly in love with 30 Rock. But mostly Tracy Morgan as Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock. And mostly his novelty party song, “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah.” I’ve had those four lines of lyrics in my head for two weeks straight. The full song can be heard here, but the chorus is the real gold.

VotD: Chrono Trigger Proposal

In honor of the recent romantic spirit—James Mielke proposing to his girlfriend with the help of Final Fantasy legends, Christmas commercials begging my boyfriend to buy me jewelry I don’t want–and Chrono Trigger’s recent re-release, today’s Video of the Day celebrates the joining of these two in ways the schmoopiest RPG nerds have only dreamed of. One hacked copy of Chrono Trigger, one inserted mountain of nostalgia, and one girlfriend playing through the game for the first time make this one of the most touching and enviable proposals to date.

VotD: Surrealism and René Magritte

As I’m sure some of you have figured out already, thanks to Google’s lovely theme, today is Magritte’s birthday. (Google combined “Golconde” and “The Son of Man” to create their splash, not a clip from the “It’s Raining Men” music video as previously purported.) Video of the Day doesn’t always have to be funny–or attempting to be funny, as just demonstrated–and because Magritte is one of my all-time favorite artists, he gets a little spotlight here at GotGame, as well. A portion of his oeuvre is displayed below (with music by Nina Simone). Or, you can just check out this amazing parody on his “Ceci n’est pas une pipe,” (”This is not a pipe”), gamer-style.

VotD: John McCain: The Baby Kissing Incident

We haven’t mentioned baby-eating for awhile, mostly thanks to Kyle’s lack of recent articles, and I think we’re a bit overdue. This doesn’t quite live up to my favorite series of political cartoons, Bill & Ted (the adventures of Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy), but it does get massive props for the James Carville representation. And lines like, “Were you surprised when Senator McCain ate your baby?” “Um, well, no, not really, Wolf. His eyes looked pretty dead.”
