A Blu Christmas; Blu-ray movies that could move the PS3
As of September 1st, there will only be 115 shopping days left until Christmas, and game companies will obviously be looking to move more consoles this holiday season. While the winter months are good times to sell consoles due to both weather and holidays, the only thing that could help sell more units would be if they came with something more than just the system. This winter will also see all those summer blockbusters coming out on DVD and Blu-ray, it might be smart for Sony try to tie some of their success to their consoles.
This holiday season looks to be one of the best times to be a gamer. Xbox 360’s getting a nice little price cut, making for a cheaper gift, and those who own or look to own a PS3 can look forward to new titles and big summer movies coming out on Blu-ray.
The Dark Knight
If TDK earns even a quarter of what it earned at the boxoffice in home video sales, it’ll be a big money maker this holiday season when it’s released on December 9th. That being said, even if we still don’t have a video game tie-in (except maybe Lego Batman), the film’s popularity would be a big thing for game systems to cash in on. Since the Xbox 360 can’t play Blu-ray, the PS3 seems like the best bet. Also a PS3 with an engraved bat symbol sounds cool, although an Xbox 360 with a Joker theme wouldn’t be without its slightly demented charm. But given that Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. are film indurstry rivals, this seems unlikely, unless Sony does some serious begging.
Incredible Hulk & Iron Man
Since Spiderman 3 is a Marvel movie produced by Sony Pictures, and was used to promote the PS3, there’s a high probability that we’ll see one or both of Marvel’s summer movies in Blu-ray form in a PS3 bundle. If Sony really wants to push some more units they should probably release some limited edition consoles, specifically ones with unique color schemes: gamma green for The Incredible Hulk, and red & gold for Iron Man. They could even include movie-themed controllers and/or collectible figures. They shouldn’t just include copies of the movie tie-in games, but of course they will.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
While The Force Unleashed will have only been out for about three months, this holiday season will be a good time to ask Santa for some power from the force. The problem is deciding which system to play it on. True Star Wars fans will most likely want a copy of The Clone Wars to go with it, and the PS3 can play both the game and the Blu-ray movie. It would be wise for Sony to release a PS3 with The Clone Wars and/or The Force Unleashed. The only thing that could make this intergalactic bundle better would be a Vader-themed PS3, because as we’ve seen with Soulcalibur IV, the PS3 and Vader go well together.
This holiday season already looks likes it’s going to be all about superheroes, Jedi, and video games. This will be the best Christmas ever.
