2008 Mod of the Year Awards

On January 2nd, voting for Mod DB’s 2008 Mod of the Year Award was announced, presenting one of the toughest fan-based decisions of 2009 thus far. In the upcoming weeks, indie developers and mod teams will have their projects voted upon as they compete for a slot in the Top Five Upcoming Mods, the Top Five Indie Games or, finally, the Best Mod of 2008. All gamers are welcome to vote, though votes of Mod DB members certainly carry more weight.

2007’s awards presented an eclectic group of PC and console-based mod and indie finalists. The current selection proves to be an even greater challenge with the growth of Mod DB’s legendary community. Mod DB’s staff commented on this in saying, “Picking a winner from 4,700 mods and 300 indie games[,] all of which are built on different game engines, platforms, genres and themes is no easy feat. We know everyones tastes differ and we can only recognize the efforts of so many.” Though under significant pressure, allowing players to select their favorite mods certainly works towards combating this arduous task.

Teaming up with their sponsors, Mod DB claims over eight thousand dollars in prizes to go to 2008’s Mod of the Year. Initial voting ends January 16th, resulting in the top 100 mods and indie games moving on to the next phase of voting. In addition to the fan-selected process, Mod DB’s editor’s choice awards will cover such areas as “Most Under-played,” or the “Ad Hoc” nominations. At the end of February, the winning games will be showcased on Mod DB through a video presentation and exclusive editorial commentary. Furthermore, links to the best of 2008 will be provided.

Receiving the Mod of the Year Trophy in the past has been a huge step for many indie games and mods in reaching commercial success. Mods like Natural Selection and Red-Orchestra were recognized for their efforts by Mod DB, granting them the necessary momentum to advance towards their goals. You can undoubtedly expect to see 2008’s victors in the future, challenging the limits of their particular niche in the video game industry.
